    thanks for the advice, i tried that earlier but would not let me run the format. Lucky though because as you pointed out i would need all the drivers....hahaha...dont have them.

    the laptop is just running very slow... thinking of upgrading the ram. only using 128 atm. there are no programs apart from windows XP installed on the computer. we had alot of virus/spyware on the comp before, think that maybe it could still be infected, although did clean it up.

    That registry cleaner that Noggin posted is advertised as freeware, but in order to actually clean the files you must register, which costs 30 USD.

    Does anybody know of a good registry cleaner that is actually free?

What operating system are you using? If windows xp then just right click on the icon of the hard drive in "My Computer", select "format" and follow the instructions with all the default settings. Be aware that if you do this you will have to have your windows xp cd or a cd for a different operating system in order to be able to restart the laptop. You will have to reinstall the OS and then all the necessary drivers for the laptop and any software you are running. What exactly is causing you to wish to format? Usually there is an easier way to solve HDD problems. Please post back with more info

    Drivers shouldn't be a problem if you need to go that route - they are available for download from the Toshiba support site - which model do you have? Here's the link in case you need it in future;
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/...

    Other than that things to try;

    1. Uninstall or Delete anything you are sure you don't need from the machine. If not sure then leave it.

    2. Run "Disk Cleanup" from "Start - All Programs - Accessories - System tools".

    say yes to all options.

    3. Run Disk Defragmenter from the same location.

    4. Get rid of whatever antivirus software you have now. Download, update and then scan your laptop with the free anti virus, anti spyware and anti rootkit programs available from;
    http://www.free.grisoft.com/

    (they are very good - not just free crap)

    Follow the instructions in each of the three programs.

    5. Download and run a windows registry cleaner - this link takes you to a reasonable one;
    http://www.free-windows-registry-cleaner...

    6. Use the laptop for a couple of days to see how much it has speeded up. If it still is not back to what you expect then download and run a memory optimizer (here is one that is ok, but there are many more available if you don't like it much);
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Memor...

    7. If you are still not getting the results you want after a couple of days, then open windows task manager (right click on the clock on your desktop taskbar). Select the "Processes" tab then click on "CPU" (probably twice) to get the processor usage details - have a look for anything that has a number next to it that you don't know what it is - you should see "system idle process" taking up most of 100%, that is normal. Any others that are taking up more than 1 or 2 % - ask again and I can hopefully identify what they are and whether or not they should be running or removed.

    8. If you have a motherboard utility program that allows you to see the motherboard and CPU temperatures, check it and let me know what you get - although it probably won't list the RAM temperature, the others are a good indication if this is too high. overheating in summer is common in machines that have not been serviced for a while and can make them run painfully slow. If it is too hot I can talk you through the procedure to improve the cooling, although you would need to be confident working inside the laptop.

    9. After that it is probably time to start thinking about more RAM, give me the details of the laptop and especially the existing RAM and I could try to track down the best deal for you.

    Hope this helps - (Please info me which model you have as this would almost certainly help)

    :)

Ouch memory managers don't work very well at all. Turn off disk indexing and you will notice the speed increase when accessing the drive. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, services, and when you get the services window open look for "Indexing Service" right click it go to properties, and in the drop down menu select disabled. IF you for some reason get an error then also open up my computer, and right click your hard disk go to properties and there should be something there saying allow the indexing service to index this drive....uncheck that box. now after you get that done reboot, and notice the speed increase for hard disk access time. Older Toshiba Satellite Pro's 4xxx series have a max of 320MB of ram, and max of 256MB stick of ram so don't go buying too big.

Toshiba satellite goes dead

Assuming this is not hibernating and your harddrive is not set to shutdown after a certain idle time, it could be this is an overheating problem. Check that the extraction vents are'nt blocked and that the fan area is well ventillated. If necassary gently hoover around all ventillation slats. Some laptops have the ability for the user to turn off the fan for certain usage, just check in your management settings that it's turned on, unless you know it is on' and it cuts in or stays on.
