Check the harddrive is there in bios.
You can get into bios by keepnig the escape key pressed while it it booting, once in bios check that the harddrive is beiing detected.
Hard drive may need formatting if it is not formatted already.
What operating system are you using?
If windows xp then just right click on the icon of the hard drive in "My Computer", select "format" and follow the instructions with all the default settings.
Be aware that if you do this you will have to have your windows xp cd or a cd for a different operating system in order to be able to restart the laptop. You will have to reinstall the OS and then all the necessary drivers for the laptop and any software you are running.
What exactly is causing you to wish to format? Usually there is an easier way to solve HDD problems.
