In order to play tapes from a VCR how do I set up the tv? It only lets me choose ''AV'' or ''2'' for channels and neither works.
Do I need a remote?
The tv model below is incorrect. It wouldn't let me enter the right one.

What you're describing is common when the center LED has failed / gone out. If you're really good at taking a unit like this apart and putting it back together - and not too bad with a solder stick you could attempt this one yourself... It is a pretty intensive repair but not difficult for a good shop just time consuming. The part isn't too expensive either, just an infared LED... In fact, we've run a bit short on stock once in awhile and bought one of the off the shelf versions from Radio Shack which worked just fine. Good Luck Bill

You are right about the auto-programming, but Magnavox no longer has the original remote.
For my answer to be right, you must have posted this question to the EXACT CORRECT model # of your Magnavox TV - 27ms343s:
Press TV on your Verizon remote, and then press "0" and "3"
If that fails:
Press MENU to see the TV’s on-screen
menu. In the menu, use VOL.+/_ and
CH.+/_ to make adjustments or selections.
You can press MENU on either the
remote control or the front of the TV to
access or remove the menu.

Is the Remote you are using an original factory supplied one from Philips?
If NI, then get one. You could ask the local Philips / Magnavox dealership, tho I have my doubts, from the age of the TV. If the dealership has one, yopu could borrow it for amn hour or so. Then use it to go to Menu>SETUP> DEMO or MENU>DEMO>DISABLE and disable the Demo function.
Otherwise, as you said, Out Front of the House on Garbage Pick UP day.

This worked for my 20" Philips Magnavox 20MT4405/17 TV, it might work for you as well. DISCLAIMER: This is just a solution that I pieced together information from various internet sources, as I could not find a free copy of the service manual to verify this. Furthermore, I am not a technician of any sort.
Enter your TV's service menu by pressing this sequence of buttons on
your remote while the TV is on:
062596 Menu
Use the arrows on your remote to scroll down to "Options", push the
right arrow to enter options.
Change the 7 options parameters in order to (write down the original values in case this does not solve):
OP1: 065
OP2: 215
OP3: 065
OP4: 162
OP5: 204
OP6: 201
OP7: 000
You need to enter all 3 digits for every number, even if there are zeroes. You use the numbers on the remote to do this.
Turn the TV off with the built in power button.
Unplug the TV for 10 seconds.
Plug the TV back in, turn it back on.
If this does not solve your problem, reset the values of the options in the service menu to the values you wrote down earlier because you have a different problem than what this fix works for.
