Floating bits in Whirlpool fridge-freezer crushed ice water

After using the crushed ice maker on my NEW Whirpool 20RID1L American fridge-freezer and allowing the ice to melt, there are what appear to be solid floating bits in the water. This is still the case after the water has been left overnight. I am concerned in case these are bits of a filter breaking away and being carried into the ice dispenser.
There are no similar problems when using the adjacent water dispenser on the unit.

As ice from my icemaker melts in a glass of clear water you see bits of floating white stuff. They almost look like very tiny feathers floating around. They don't go away they just keep floating around.
My water supply is filtered and the same filter produces very clear drinking water. The ice maker is 10 yr. old. My plumber friend has it in his ice as well and has no idea what it is either.

I have the same issue. After 5 1/2 years the white stuff like feathers appeared. All the answers about it being hard water minerals are not true for this problem. The white flakes appear immediately, not as the ice gets close to the center. If I put a bowl of water in my freezer, then I get the same stuff, but if I cover it then I do not get the white flakes. I have a Whirlpool with a fan in the freezer. I have cleaned the freezer and even checked all the intake area. Still no solution. Any ideas?

Ice cubes freeze from the outside, so the center of the cube is the last to freeze. Ice is pure water, only H 2 O, so as the ice cube freezes, all of the dissolved minerals are pushed to the center. Near the end of the freezing, there isn't much water left in the center of the cube, so these minerals become very concentrated, and they form the "white stuff" – the technical name is precipitate. The hardness minerals that cause the "white stuff" are not toxic.

Why does my daewoo fridge freezer works intermittently ?

You either have a faulty thermostat, a loose connection or most likely a build up of ice inside the freezer. I had the same problem. Almost replaced fridge. Took all the food out one day, took out the racks and disassembled bottom and rear and found a two foot log block of ice inside air return. Removed ice everything works perfectly.

Fridge Freezer model KA58NP90 Ice maker problem

What is most likely your problem is the crushed ice solenoid. This solenoid, which is located next to the auger motor behind the ice bucket, is failing to actuate when you request cubed ice. Its "home" setting is crushed, and actuates to allow cubes past the crushing mechanism in the bucket. To be certain its the problem, remove the ice bucket, and tape the door light switch in the closed position. actuate the ice dispenser lever, for both cubed and crushed ice. you will see a square hole next to the rotating fork, when you select cubes, it should open. If it does open, there is something wrong with your ice bucket, perhaps the arm is broken, or the door inside bucket is off its snap in type hinge or broken altogether. If it doesnt open, replace the solenoid

Check the coil at the back of the freezer for ice buildup. Should there be ice build up, have it defrosted and cleaned. If that does not solve it check out the thermistor, also located at the back at a panel. It may have gone bad.

Sounds like a blocked defrost drain. By "American" I presume you mean side-by-side.
I had a similar problem with a freezer-on-top style Samsung. The solution to that was to defrost the freezer, remove the false backing plate in the freezer (required removal of the ice cube tray. the panel just pops out with a bit of pulling). The drain hole beneath the freezer coils was blocked with ice. This drain passes down into the fridge and then out the back of the fridge into the evaporation pan next to the motor. There is a collector pan under the freezer coils, this and the drain hole were filled with ice. When the freezer goes into its self-defrost cycle the water collects here and then overflows into the fridge.
I removed the ice with hot water/vinegar mixture (so it doesn't re-freeze immediately) and simultaneosuly used a bit of chiselling with a screwdriver to clear the drain plug. I did this from inside the fridge working up the drain hole into the freezer. The whole job took about an hour.
