When i put the new 4gb card in the slot and turn on the camera, there is a picture of a bird in flight and nothing works on the camera, cannot even tuern it of without removing batterys, works fine with no card in slot
Since you don't specify the make and model of the camera, I can only speak in general. Try a smaller capacity card. Some cameras are limited to smaller capacity cards by design. The larger ones will not be addressed correctly and can cause "odd" failures.

The IXUS 50 works with MMC and SD cards. Your new 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
Initially, you need to format the new memory when you place it in the camera. Did you do this? If not, you will lose what pictures you currently have on there as only your camera will be able to read the data and nothing else. Always format initially.
4GB "SD" cards are almost always actually SDHC (high capacity) cards. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.
So your camera is not able to use the 4GB card, and is ignoring it and using internal memory only. That memory is tiny and won't hold many pictures, and when it is full, the camera cannot work at all. You need to delete the pics in the internal memory and get a memory card your camera can understand (2GB or less).
A 4GB memory card will be an SDHC type. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.
Hi,
Your memory card is damaged. Please try to get back your pictures at camera shop. But usually, nothing can done on defective memory card.
I suggest you to back your memory card files on your computer next time to prevent this problem.
Regards, Jay
The problem is with the memory card. It probably just shorted internally and is no longer useful. The amount of memory is not the problem, as I used a 4GB card for a long time and my card finally went bad. You will just have to get another memory card and MAYBE find someone to be able to retrieve your data.
I have nikon coolpix L5, i just brought a 4gb memory card that's supposed to be compatible, but when i go to take a picture it say You cannot use this card?
try formatting it in the computer, then initializing it in the camera. It's possible that the camera can only handle memory up to 1Gb. Try a 1g CF card.
It looks as though the camera cannot support memory as high as 4GB. Capacities above 2.2 GB require that your camera supports "FAT32", and S7000 does not support FAT32.
