When the MFC is plugged in and turned on, there is a grinding sound that comes from the area of the scanner bar. The led readout is" Please Wait..Res: Standard". The machine will cycle through this same process again and again, and never comes on for proper operation. The scanner bar, which usually aligns itself while the scanner is warming up, does not move and the rubber drive belt seems to be trying to drive the scanner bar forward, to no avail. The machine then turns itself off and tries the startup process again. An interesting observation - When the scanner bed and the printer cover is open to be able to look inside, the scanner bar aligns itself as normally the case, but the machine turns off immediately when the cover is placed in the down (normal - closed) position. I spoke with techs at the brother help site, but they were at a loss as to what is happening. Can anyone help?
Re: Startup problems with the MFC-5840CN All-in-one
Well thisone most techs have to see first. the simple solution is that the cover is binding some where and putting pressure on the scanner bar or its slide rail.
my best sugestion is to take it to a printer tech and have them look at it

All The Best: Pineworks
the problem might be the connection from the mother board of the printer to the scanner maybe due to lost contact and the ribbon was broken you might just have to reconnect it or it might be broken and need replacement
The problem is your need to change the Main board or scanner...cant be fix it need be replace either main board or scanner sometime worse senario it need both.....The cos of teh scanner and board kinda expensive....
This could be for two reasons:
1. Lightning strike the days before has seriously damaged the circuit board.
2. (nearly the same) some part within the circuit board is damaged.
In both ways the circuit baord needs replacement. Unfurtunately the costs for this spare part is twice as high as a new mfc 240c...
You can try to buy another defectiv one (scanner broken or clogged print head) from eBay and simply change the circuit board, to keep your machine alive (This is what brother themself do: collecting faulty machines, separate parts and refurbish them for swapping ;-))
AF after cleaning cycles??????????????????????????
AF means that the scanner flatcable is not connected to the main pcb (When powering up you should hear a grinding sound from the scanner area). Open the scanner cover as for changing the ink carts. Open the small cover (looks like a " L ") and connect the white flat cable simply by pushing it into the main pcb.
You have to open the scannerbox very carefully.
There is a contact on the lefthandside placed where the motor and belt is located. Check the position of the motor an ohter parts, by carefully sliding the scanner bar by hand. You may need to click in some parts because they have got loosen.
