The compressor is that black casing you see at the bottom of your refrigerator - inside this sealed case is the motor assembly which stits on 3 or 4 springs that act like a cushion - you have a little gap at the bottom where the lubricating oil is present. Your springs have likely worn out and when the compressor shuts off the assembly is banging against the rigid casing make that loud "klonk" or bang noise. It IS normal for compressor to make some faint "tick-tick-tick...tick.....tick" when shutting off, but loud banging, bell sounds, etc, means the assembly is banging on the case from the inside - you can indeed live with the noise, your compressor will function normally, probably for months, or even years - it can also keep wearing out and one day the noise might get very loud (like a very high humming noise) - There is NOTHING that can be fixed, you either pay $400+ to change the compressor or buy a new refrigerator - If you DO replace a compressor usually the replacement will be noisier - Keep a thermostat inside your refrigerator at all time to make sure your compressor is still keeping your refrigerator and freezer cool.

WE decided to live with the noise until it either gets much worse or the refrig. fails. Thanks for your interest.

My GE tfx27f is working fine but when the

the thump ing sound is probably the rubber mounts under the compressor . they go hard and do not insulate the compressor . . pry the comp up on all four mounts and make sure they are loose and not stuck down if ther are hard and not bouncy .. replace them . if compressor has borken internal motor mounts / there is nothing you can do . but put up with noise ..

Kenmore top freezer, Refrierator shuts off with loud clunk.

It sounds like you may have a compressor that is working hard against high pressure due to a dirty condenser or a condenser fan not running or blocked. If all is well otherwise, the mounting springs inside the compressor may have broken or are weak. The only fix then is a new compressor.

Loud noise when stops ''running''.

the noise your hearing  is a weak spring in the compressor. what happens is the compressor is a motor inside of a steel shell that spins at high rpm's when the unit shuts down and as the compressor starts to stop the weak spring is allowing the compressor motor to bang against the steel shell. around here we actually call these "Bangers". anyway the fix is obviously to replace the compressor. but considering the age of the unit you may want to move it to the garage and buy a new one for the kitchen.
Btw in my experience this does not interfere with normal operation of the unit it is just annoying. If I can be of further assistance please ask thanks Peyton

Everytime the compressor stops there is a loud 'bang' sound.

When the compressor stops, the movements of the internal components are normally absorbed by the internal spring supports. If a spring breaks, etc., the inner moving part will contact the outer case and give a knocking noise or two when it stops. You can make the compressor (even a new one) do this by giving it a shake. The compressor will most likely run for years this way with no performance problems. It is rather expensive to replace a compressor, (especially for only a noise issue) so most people just live with it or get a new refrig and use their old one as a second refrig in a basement or where ever. Please don't bother to rate this, as anything but a Fix-Ya drops my score.

Refrig compressor "knocks" when cycling off

could be a broken spring inside the compressor and would only make a noise as the compressor stops. nothing you can do about it. you would need to break open the compressor, replace the spring, weld it back, then charge it up again with refrigerant.

Loud banging noise

some popping noise is normal but if it is banging when it stops it needs a new compressor.what has happened is one or more motor mount is broken or weak it could run like this for months or years but it is annoying! if its warranty they have to replace it.
