This could be a minor problem, or a problem that needs attention right away. Many times one of the hydraulic lifters may be sticking or be loose. Try and isolate the noise to see if its only coming from one cylinder head. If so, you can take off the valve cover to see if you can identify anything abnormal with the lifters. Hydraulic lifters do not need adjustment. Some people use a oil additive called ENGINE-RESTORE to reduce symptoms, but I have no experience with the product. Good luck, sir.

Might be Exhaust, but if Exhaust is loose , you usualy here a rattle when you are also driving the car on the road. Best to take Car to local Repairer , put Car on ramp , and take a look , as it could be something else that Rattles.

Rattle from car at 1900revs only when in gear

moving noise is very hard to find.

could well be exhaust shields,
did you take a rubber mallet and tap the parts (exh, end to end?)
bang ,rattle, bang , repeat
seen many bad CAT (brick inside loose) rattle. hit it. bingo. there you go.

i also jam objects in cat shelds to stop them for making noise.
just for temporary to find source.

2003 Toyota Rav4. The problem is flickering oil light with rattling on first start up when engine is cold. The car seems to run OK however I haven't driven it more than a block.

running 0w oil.?
try real oil.
10w-30 or post location, are you in Alaska or in Key West.
rattling is BAD BAD BAD, inside any engine.
find cause. do not drive it. or kiss off the engine.(cascade failures)

When you driving or just idle what? Driveing look for bad tires look for drive axle, bearing. Idle well look close to the engine and see or feel

Adjust vaules on 15.5 brigg

i turn the engine til one valve opens then adjust the other to .005 then rotate the engine til that valve opens then set the other one to .005 its not the text book way but has done fine for me for years

Rattling sound from the exhaust

The metal shielding around your catalytic converter could be rattling or the rubber donut that holds the rear tailpipe could be bad. When your car is cold shake your tailpipe and see if you can reproduce the noise. If you can your tailpipe donut is likely bad. Three dollars at any auto parts store. If it does rattle when you shake your tailpipe then the heat shield for your convert could be loose. You need to tighten it up another piece of metal between it and the converter to keep it from rattling. If you hear the rattle when you go over bumps too then your exhuast is probably, loose. Crawl under there and stake shaking things, I am sure you'll find the problem

Check under the hood and inspect the valve cover gasket. If it's bad it would explain why you don't see any leaks on the ground because it's probably burning off on the manifold. This ticking you're hearing is a lack of lubrication to the rocker arms. Apart from the valve cover gasket, you should get under the car and inspect the oil pan and oil filter for seepage.
