My rca tv has unusable signal onit

Hi, Check the cable connections to and from the TV.
Change the channels to see if there are others that are out.
If you are not using any cable company then you will still need a set top box to unscramble the digital signal. Good luck.

I have my rca model f36665 hooked up strait from the wall to the tv and I can't get it to find the channels. do I have to have a cable box?

First if cable I presume you have entered the menu and selected cable.

Another possible reason is the tuner/s in this set are bad---hook a DVD or something to one of the rear inputs and see if set works.

If set works that way and tuner turns out to be bad you can with a box with av cable out connections on back just go into a rear input and bypass the tuner--leave set on that input and change channels with the box.

Let me know if you have questions and what you find---usually on this set if no signal---"unusable signal" will appear on screen if no signal.

My tv comes on and has "unusable signal" floating on it

What is your signal source, OTA or cable? Did lightning or another type of power surge recently hit? Make sure you have the TV on the desired input.

If OTA check your antenna direction and that you have the Channel Setup (from the menu) set to Antenna. Also check if you have the right antenna to get stations in your area. Antennaweb.org gives the most likely channels and directions. tvfool.com will give more detailed information and more stations. Both sites assume outdoor antennas but the direction information is always good. Look for new construction or big trees that might block the signal. Do you have multiple TVs sharing the same antenna? You might need an amplifier.

If cable, check the Channel setup. Check for someone recently damaging your cable installation (cutting the wires, trying to split the signal to get it for free) Splitting the signal to multiple TVs may also be an issue, get an amplifier of the correct type. Some cable systems may require a bidirectional amplifier.

If you recently had a power surge, see if the TV works with other inputs.
Tuners can be replaced if the TV is worth the labor costs for you.

I hope this helps.

( My household had three tvs and a digital to analog converter that lost their tuners after a nearby lightning strike. We chose to replace the TVs since two were over 15 years old and the third was also out of warranty.)

Can not tune the tv

My dear friend. A TV is a TV and TV's are many and varied. If you stated the model and what it exactly does, maybe I or other people could help you instantly. But since you have said little in relation to TV tuning, then expect a few guys to help you. But allow me to give you a hint that applies to almost all flat panel TV's, ok? Right. On every TV there is a MENU that gives you many options. First you need to press a button on the remote that displays component connection channels and TVincoming signal type. Since I don't know what brand of flat panel TV you have, I can only ask you to find and press the button on the remote that displays on TV screen the following component channels, that is DVT, AVT, Component 1, Component 2, HDTV1, HDTV 2, HDTV 3 and so on. Apart from DTV and ATV, from Component 1 to HDTV 3, these additional channels are for DVD players that also have HDTV outputs and BlueRay players and or Audio devices. If yout TV hasn't got as many channel input, then ignore this part. To tune your TV you have to first press the butoon on the remote to activate the onscreen channel as above, then scroll on DTV or ATV and, depending on whether you have Digital TV in your country or the standard high resolution Analog TV. Lets say you have Digital NTSC format TV system, select it and then press ENTER on your remote. In the menu you find and click SCAN. Depending on where you are, the TV will begin scanning all frequencies in your territory and possible interstates if the modulator is powerful enough to pick up weak signals. Most TV's have an inbuilt set-top box that boost the signal to give you a crystal clear pic. Now, after pressing SCAN, the TV reaches a signal with a clear pic, all you have to do is recognise the channel that comes in view. The instructions on how to save that channel are on screen and then you can configure it as, say channel 4, if the channel that appeared is channel 4, if not, try and recognise what channel had appeared and then configure it with a number, so when you press that number on the remote it will be the same channel you had stored in the TV memory. After you have done this, press scan again and it will scan to the next channel. Once the scanning recognises another clear signal and it is as clear as a baby's face, you have recognised the new channel. Try, find out what channel it is by looking at the screen, there is usually a visible TV station name or number embossed on the lower corner of the screen, once you know what station that is or what channel number it is, configure that number and press ENTER (save) button. Do the same with the remaining channels. Later I will tell you how to skip unwanted blank channels that usually have no signals but snow and lines, or have faint signals that can only be boosted with a TV booster available from reputable TV retailers, or install a bigger more powerful antenna.

Reagards.

Says unusable signal when trying to hookup my Nintendo 64.

Here are a couple of things to try. Go into the menu and make sure that you have the "ANTENNA" selected instead of "CABLE". Also make sure that the channel that you are using (3 or 4) is programmed into the memory of the tv. If not, use "auto program" in the menu to program the channels.

These newer tv's are not the same as older tv's. If none of that works, put a antenna amp on the output of the nintendo and then plug it into the tv. This should fix it.

What is your TV input connection? Are you using Antenna? Cable? Dish?

The Unusable Signal sounds like the TV is not getting a signal. Does your TV have a built in HD Tuner?

If you are using Antenna you might want to try setting up the connections and it should search for quality channels that you get good signal strength. If you are on channel 2 and there is no over the air channel 2 it may say "unusable signal".

Maxim 1160 (Thomson) 32" Widescreen CRT - no signal

Your going to need the original remote first. then go into the menu and do a channel search on it. if it goes through and finds no channels then the tuners bad. You could have that famous RCA on nboard tuner fault where alot of sheild grounds are bad. This is not a job for the layman. if you cannot get channels by doing a channel scan call out an rca or thompson repair person.
