Sometimes when I turn on my laptop, the screen is very dark, although I can still just barely make out my icons, desktop, etc. This makes me think it is a problem with the backlight.
However, it never happens when I have its power cord plugged in - it's only when I switch over to using it on battery power. I know the battery is fully charged, so that's not the issue. Also, it doesn't happen every time.
Thanks for any help!
The laptop will reduce screen brightness when on battery to reduce the battery consumption. It should happen every time. You can adjust brightness with the fn+f10 but it will be dimmer when running on battery.

Why did you replace the lcd inverter? Were you able to barely see icons
on the desktop which is an indication that the lcd inverter is bad? If
not, then you need to replace the lcd screen. If you could barely see
the icons and you replaced the lcd inverter, then the inverter is bad.
Just because the inverter is new does not mean it works. If the video
shows on the external monitor, but you can't see anything on the
laptop's screen even when you shine a flashlight on it then the lcd
screen is bad.
Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.
Plug
in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can
be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it
has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that
proves your ideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when
you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require
you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key
then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12).
The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon
of a display. If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad.
If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on
the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

So the power is on but there is no display. Does it look like the laptop booted all the way? Does it
look like the laptop is running but there is no display?
If the laptop is running, you hear the fans running, the hard drive running, etc. but the display is black, try the steps below: Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

If it's a desktop try another monitor. If the other monitor works, then the original one you were using is bad. If the other monitor does not work then most likely your video card is bad.
if it's a laptop take a flashlight and shine it on the dark screen. If you look real hard you might barely see the icons on the desktop. If, so then your LCD Inverter is bad. If you don't see the desktop with a flashlight, try using a external monitor. If the external monitor displays your desktop, then the video card is good, but more than likely the screen will need to be replaced.
make sure your wire is connected to the main power, cuz it could be loose, my laptop goes dim if its not connected to the main power, but im not sure about very very dark
Take a bright light and shine it on the screen when it is on. Can you barely see any display, but really dark? If so, the lamp or the lamp inverter has failed (some laptops use LEDs instead of CCFL lamps and has no inverter either).
Just hooking up to another display doesn't necessary tell you anything if it doesn't show anything. As sometimes you have to change a settings in the BIOS, use the Fn key plus another key that looks like a monitor, or change it through a display menu on the screen.
