Compaq Computer I was loading a program and my computer is stuck at the initial red COMPAQ screen with 3.3 in the lower seft corner and and indication in the right lower corner. I press the keys but nothing happens. I try to turn the computer off but the button doesn't respond. I can unplug the computer at the power cord to turn it off. When I turn it back on it goes to the original problem screen. Thanks.

When the pc is powering up, keep pressing F8 to get into safe mode, and when in the menu select last known good configuration and press enter for a reboot. This should get you running, if not restart again pressing F8, but this time select start windows in safe mode and whilst in safe mode select the administrator account and try doing a system restore to a date before you tried loading the programe, and let the pc re boot, and hopefully you are now ok.

My gateway is stuck in configure 3 of 3 at start up

Turn on your computer. If your computer is already on, then reboot it. You need to see the initial display screen to get into the BIOS. Press the F1 key immediately in one second intervals when you see the initial screen displaying the BIOS provider information. The majority of Gateway computers use the F1 key. If, for some reason this does not work, then use the F2. All of Gateway's desktops use the F1 or F2 keys. this will vary depending on your computer and operating system Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart. Hope this helps.

Compaq Presario pops up a system boot menu everytime at startup.

This comes up mostly when it requires a BIOS save. Try that. If that does not help, sometimes setting the default settings and saving will help.

My PC won't start? every time i start it the fan just spins fast and loud and nothing happens, the screen doesn't show. this happened when i took the PC apart. it a Compaq presario sr1610nx

Initially test the monitor in another pc, if display available use the monitor in Compaq presario sr1610nx. Load to BIOS by restarting and tapping F1, if the display available, the computer is ok. restart and tap F8, if the advanced boot option screen comes up, the software is ok.
Restart the computer and tap F10 and proceed with a destructive recovery to reload the operating system on the computer

Trying to reformat my PC but can't get into BIOS set up.

Hey,

Seems the screen is slow to start up, right after pressing the power button, keep tapping on f1 or f10 untill the bios screen or something else comes up. that will definitely get you into the bios and dont mind if the computer starts to beep, slow down a little and keep tapping.

Thanks,
Ekse

How do you enter set up in an oler compaq presario. It came with win 98.also if hard drive controller is bad can I put in a new one without replacing motherboard

Hi,

Depending on the actual model of the old Compaq, you can enter the CMOS/BIOS setup by pressing on the a special function key or key combination during Power-On Self Test (POST), before the operating system loads. During POST, the BIOS usually displays a prompt such as:
Press F2 to enter Setup
Common keystrokes that will access the BIOS Setup are F1, F2, F10, and Del. For older Compaq computers, like the Deskpro 286 or 386, you must place the Diagnostics diskette in the A: drive, and then restart the computer.
For newer Compaqs, like the Prolinea, Deskpro XL, or Presario, while the cursor is at the top right corner of the screen during bootup, press the F10 key.

The hard drive controller can not be replaced without replacing the motherboard. Incidentally, there are old PCI sundcards that has an IDE port and can be configured to replaced defective on-board IDE port.

If your concern has not been addresses after completion of the above procedures, you may need to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Cmos bios setup utility

Hi, On some Compaq models, entry to CMOS/BIOS setup requires pressing F10 as soon as the cursor (white box) appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen (The cursor is displayed on the screen for about two seconds. If you do not press F10 during this time, you must restart the computer and try again.); Alternately on some other models, it is at boot when you see the "Compaq" log in big letters. hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turned up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
