Yes, you will need an antenna to get live OTA TV. The Haier HL42XR1 has an ATSC (digital OTA) tuner and a NTSC (analog OTA) tuner. Your location and distance to the local transmitters will determine what type of antenna will be best. See antennaweb.org or tvfool.com and enter your address. TVfool.com gives a full list of all stations you may be able to receive depending on your antenna (indoor, outdoor, height, direction). If you share the signal from the antenna with another device, you may need an amplifier to maintain the signal strength. (Warning, when amplifiers fail, the signal can become worse than the unamplified signal. With digital TV, signals are either strong enough for the tuner to understand or a "no signal" message will appear.)

I hope this helps.

What do i need to get regular channels on the tv

How to get regular TV channels?
Your HDTV should have a digital TV Tuner (ATSC) which may need an indoor antenna. Change your TV's input selector to TV or Antenna or Digital (probably one of those three) and scan for channels. If you don't get any channels, then you do need an antenna. Probably another $10.

Your choices usually are cable with/without digital channels and Cable with / without digital channels. Once you choose which tuner the TV will use, then it will autoscan for channels.

I lost my satellite because of money problems. I don't have cable for the same reason. My television will play dvds but I cannot get any television channels. Is there a setting I am missing, or any other...

Yes.
You will need to get an antenna(either indoor or outdoor) for OTA (over the air) receptions,
> Connect the antenna to the back of the tv.
> Go into the main menu and set the channel signal input to Air instead of Cable.
> Go to the channel auto-program menu and scan in the channels.
> Save the results.
> Watch tv.

There is something called FTA (Free to Air) which is similar to satellite tv but does not have a monthly cost. You would however need a receiver.

Sharp digital tv cannot receive digital signal

This television would benefit from an hdtv indoor outdoor amplified antenna not obstructed by trees, aluminum, bricks, and etc. Make sure the signal type is air and not cable and complete a channel scan during primetime tv hours after connecting to this antenna. Buy a large one that you can mount to the wall usually in a large flat box on the shelf in the store. Philips has one sold at Walmart.

Auto search through

Tested and verified solution:
  1. Set Tuner Mode to "antenna".
  2. Run a channel scan. Should get zero channels found.
  3. Set Tuner Mode to "cable".
  4. Run another channel scan.
  5. Celebrate!

HD ready?

It was not a problem. It is just a question. Is it HD ready or not without a converter box or cable?
I will go to a store and ask a tech if you can not answer.

Only channels 2-13 show on new Dynex 19" LCD TV

You'll need to find the Cable/Antenna setup and change it from Antenna to Cable. Sometimes the setting you want is called CATV.

Bought ilo without manual

You need an antenna, satellite, or cable source. If using an antenna, you must then go to the menu and select scan digital channels.

If nothing comes up, you may need to reposition your antenna and try again, or get a larger antenna.
