yes, and I hear water running. Also after pushing the drain/cancel button numerous times, eventually the water drained. so I thought all was well. Ran another cycle.. had the water again....

The drain should be attached to your garbage disposal if you have one. If so you should see a steady strean during the drain cycle. There is a timer that operates the pump after the water level switch goes to empty. See that the drain is not restricted in some manner.

Can you hear mechanical sounds when you choose drain/cancel? This is to indicate whether the pump is actually engaging.

Check the following.

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

Why is there water standing in the bottom of my dishwasher after it has completed the wash and dry cycles.......

If water remains in the dishwasher after the cycles end, check the kitchen sink drain to make sure it's not clogged. If there's no clog, try pressing the Cancel button; most dishwashers run the drain pump when the Cancel button is pressed.
Check the dishwasher drain line, drain path and drain pump.

Dishwasher was not draining. I cleaned out everything and now it wont start

I have the same problem with another Kitchenaid model. I've had better results at keeping the water drained by running two back to back water saver cycles than running a full pots and pans cycle.

Kenmore elite dishwasher model 630 Smart Wash light is flashing

You may want to try:
Press a series of four buttons in quick succession. Press "Heated Dry," "Normal Wash," "Heated Dry" and "Normal Wash" to instruct your Kenmore dishwasher to run a short diagnostic test.
Wait for two minutes while your Kenmore dishwasher runs its diagnostic test.
Press the "Cancel/Drain" button once your dishwasher has completed its diagnostic test. This should reset your dishwasher control panel.
Check to make sure that there's no standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher. Standing water in your dishwasher may indicate that your dishwasher has stopped mid-cycle. You will need to press the "Cancel/Drain" button before you can reset your dishwasher control panel.

Water standing in tub

If there is a lot of water sitting inside the applicance, it's possible that the high water float switch has been activated and is preventing the dishwasher from running. Open the door, remove the bottom rack, dip as much water out of the bottom as possible with a shallow ladle or even tupperware container. When that is accomplished, shut the door and try to run a drain cycle. If the unit won't start, you may have to remove more water. You don't have to have the rack in place to run the drain cycle.

Machine not starting, draining.

Drain pump has timed out, could be a blockage on the drain line kinked or twisted hose blocked drain pipe, try lowering the drain hose as flat to the floor in a bowl or bucket and drain as much water out as you can then re-position drain hose nto drain stand pipe and try starting a cyle just doing that may resolve your problem

Not draining at all. water collected at bottom of unit. tried "cancel/drain" numerous times and water remains at bottom of unit.

Possible blocked waste pipes or cycle pipes. but some specialist de-greaser and let it soak in dishwasher over nite - put dishwasher on in morning, repeat until its flushed.
