Saving the game data on Professor Layton and the Curious Village

I've bought this game 2nd hand and it seems to play fine - however, it doesn't seem to be saving the game properly. I've saved the game as the instructions tell you to but when I return to the game later on, I'm back to the start again and it doesn't give me an option to return to my saved game only to start a new game!
Usually with DS games after you've saved you can press start and it asks if you're sure you want to quit etc. I can't seem to do this with Prof. Layton so after saving the only option is to turn it straight off.
Is this the reason why it's not saving properly, how can I turn it off safely? Or is the problem that it's 2nd hand or broken??
Help please!

mine's the same.. i bought mine first hand it only gives me the option to start new game when i want to go back to my old game... it's sooo annoying

Thanks - I was very lucky as I was able to return the game and my seller refunded me the full price. I'd enjoyed the little I had played so I bought another one - but a new one this time and I've just finished the whole thing, including all the bonus puzzles! It's made me think twice about buying a second hand game.

The game should, of course, overwrite existing saves without problem (even if second hand)

You are not prompted to save when you quit (since there really isn't a quit or even a return to menu)

While the game does have a few set save points, the best way to save (which can be done at any time) is to use the Save option in the trunk (some players forget about this)

If you save into a save slot doing this and it's not there when you next restart the game, then something is wrong

It should also be noted that some (if not many) of the "second hand" copies purchased on eBay are actually pirated copies that have caused problems for players (including stopping with blacked out screens during the game)

If you are confident that saving just isn't working and you're unable to return the game for replacement or refund, one drastic course of action may be to corrupt the save (by quickly turning off the DS while it saves), thus causing the game to say the save is corrupted and make a new save file ... naturally, this should only be done as a last resort

Bottom screen blacks out in Professor Layton and the C. Village

There is no fix for this type of problem on a DS

If you obtained a "second hand" copy of the game (particularly from some place like eBay), then you could well have a pirated copy of the game (which are known to have problems just like this one due to faulty game data)

These "black screens" are usually caused by corrupt cut scene data that causes the scene (such as the one that should appear where you get the vase) not to play

As the cut scene doesn't play and you can't skip the cut scene in the Curious Village, you're basically stuck

If you purchased the game from a store, take if back for a replacement (possibly after testing it on another DS just to make sure)
