Transmitting and Receiving Signals

I have a very unusual issue. I installed this radio in my vehicle, a Cobra 19 DX IV CB Radio, and every thing works great. The fuse is not popped, the mic is good, antenna is screwed in all the way, however, when my buddy and I were getting it set up, I could receive his signal and hear him talking, but when I tried talking to him (we weren't more than 15 feet away from each other), it sounded like I was talking through a roll of paper towels. When I am moving down the road, though, I can transmit just fine. I have not adjusted the antenna, but as far as I understand, that is all I haven't done. Could you guys help me out?

Found the solution. Find a buddy with a cb and started messing with the antenna. That did the trick!

Modulation being muffled could be the mic or it could be an adjustment in the unit.

SOURCE: CB transmission

Hello 64driver,

Make sure the radio is grounded properly and that the SWR is around 1.2:1, 1.3:1 is good but try to get it to 1.2:1. Also take a power output reading while keying the mic. To do this with your power meter put it in-line with the CB and your antenna and key the mic you should get about 4 to 5 watts PEP. If this is the case your unit is putting out the proper power level, if not have the power amplifier checked by a qualified repair shop.

I hope this helps

SOURCE: Cobra 19 DX IV CB Radio Gets no signal at all

my only idea is the frequency that Canadians transmit/recieve on is different than us down south (in the USA). I know Europe and the UK use a different frequency range so my guess is that Canada uses a different radio frequency range than the U.S. making you unable to communicate with fellow radio users. You may be able to search the frequency range for Canada vs. the U.S. and see if there's a difference. Hope this helps...and again, it's just a thought.

SOURCE: Low transmitting range on Cobra MRF55

Hi dstrand, sorry you are having a problem. I will need some more info if you can. Is this radio in a base situation or mobile? Have you had any work don recently? Have you changed anything on the system? (Microphone, antenna, coax, etc)

Haave you checked your swr recently/ If yes, did you use a seperate meter or did you use one built in the radio?

Hope to hear from you soon.

SOURCE: transmitting and receiving

RF gain should be all the way up. Turn the squelch all the way down. Turn the ANL/NB to just ANL.

Turn the dynamic up at least 3/4.

Once you have confirm you can receive and transmit, then you can turn up the squelch up until white noise just stops.

Make sure you are on 19 by the highway. Key up and say break break one nine, can some one give me a radio check please.

you should get a response.

Your RF gain is how much you receive. the higher it is the more you receive. In normal operation there is no need for it ever to be less the all the way on.

Squelch is just to knock out fuzz, and if you only want to hear people close not far. A little less then half way is a basic setting.

the ANL switch is the automatic noise limiter. if you have interference from your vehicle, like engine noise, turning this on will quiet that. If it is extreme engine noise then switch it to NB, noise blanker. It is just a more intense setting.

your dynamic is how loud your audio is. if its low or all the way down, you will not transmit audio loud enough for people to hear. If its a stock radio and has not been tuned, if you turn it all the way up, that is fine.

Wanting to put a cobra 19 dx IV cb radio in my truck and i need to know how do i connect the powersource to the fusebox

If I were you, I'd hook the power source directly to the battery. There should be a plug like rubber thing near your brakes. Take that out and run your wire from the cb radio to the battery. This way the truck doesn't have to be turned on to talk. Just make sure that you turn the cb radio off each time you use it or you'll drain the battery.

Would a slightly damaged co phase coax affect radio transmitting capabilities

Yes. Co-phasing is very touchy anyway. The co-phase unit needs to be matched and it needs to be in almost perfect condition.
