Question about Canon PowerShot S400 / IXUS 400 Digital Camera
I have this camera Canon S400 for about 3 years, now is showing on screen flickering lines, and the picture is off color (purple), there is anything that can be done to solve the problem? It has been a beautiful camera, was never dropped.

It has been confirmed that the connecting
parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may
become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or
used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this
occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting
Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image.
This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during
shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.
Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will
repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the
above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is
caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of
shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

I just called Canon tech support at 800-828-4040. We verified the LCD display is okay, because menus display properly, only images generated by the CCD seem to run and turn purple. Canon is emailing a form for me to fill out and enclose with the camera and a prepaid UPS shipping label. I provide the box. I was asked to remove the battery, CF card and strap before sending it in. The tech said it would take 2 to 2-1/2 weeks to repair the camera.
Needless to say I'm very happy as I like the camera, and I am very pleased with Canon as well.
Just got this email from Canon: "
We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Based on our initial
examination, we will start the necessary repairs at no charge to you. You can
expect the repair to be completed and returned back to you within approximately
7 business days* from the date shown above."
Hurrah for Canon!
I sent my S400 to Canon on Nov 27, 2007, using the UPS label they supplied. They received it on the 29th. I got it back today, via FedEx 2nd Day, and it works perfectly. Their note said they checked everything else and restored it to "Factory condition." I believe it, because the motor that extends and retracts the lens is about 20 dB quieter. Very pleased, especially as I only bought the camera on eBay a little more than a month ago, but Canon doesn't care about warranty status. Thanks to FixYa for helping fix me up!

I found the same problem recently, but it is intemittent. It then changed from flickering lines to more of a blurred picture on the LED screen. I have tried all things to clear it, but the best seems to be to turn it off for a while and it often clears. Previously captured pictures review fine on the LED screen, but when the screen blurs (with a blurry motion too!) that is how the picture records and reviews. I bought my Ixus 400 in Sep 03 and this problem started in Jun 07.

All your problems sound like defective CCD imagers. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. I've already had two cameras fixed this way (I collect Canon's, what can I say :). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status! Please check the following two links for more info:

The problem is the same. However, if you keep on clicking the display button you can at time get the problem cleared and also make it re-appear. If you shine a light in the lens with the camera ON you can see a disc appear and disappear with the clicking of the display. The probabilities are that either there is a loose connection or the disc that rotates is sticking. Hopefully this should be a simple repair/ service issue requiring adjustments. Will someone from anon take on this.
i have the same flickering problem thing. but now it's worse. after 3 months of the flickering and off color problems, now the display monitor doesn't show anything at all, just blank with a little bit of blinking at a time.how's that?
My LCD display will sometimes go purple appear to run as if it were wet, starting in the center. It was intermittent for a while, now constant. Switching to playback mode the LCD looks fine. When the display first starts going purple I can still take good photos. After it's been on a few minutes, even the pix are bad. I've tried bumping it, running through the display options, switching from Playback to Record, changing batteries. Nothing helps. It does seem to be heat related. The Canon support page someone else gave a link to is down. :( Tomorrow I am going to open it up and look for a bad connection. It's a good thing this happened after I bought an S5 or I would have gone for a different brand. My S400 looks new and has never been abused.
