The water will not drain from dishwasher. What should I do?

Two things can cause this problem:
1. The check valve in your dishwasher may be defective, allowing water and food debris to seep (or run) back into your dishwasher.
2. Your drain hose may not be "mounted up" the way it should be. Look under your sink. Look at how your drain hose is connected to your garbage disposal. If the hose runs down to the floor of your cabinet and into your dishwasher, that is wrong. Instead, it should be mounted up so that water from the sink and garbage disposal would have to flow up first to get into the dishwasher. If you do this, then even if you have a bad check-valve in the dishwasher, it will prevent the problem (or greatly reduce the problem) of dirty water flowing back into your dishwasher.

The problem is most likely that the pump empeller had been damage by pieces from a broken dish or a small piece of siverware. The only way to fix this is to take the dishwasher apart and replace the empeller. If you choose to do this yourself, you should go to the manufactures web site to see if you can download instructions on how.

If you can close the door, turn the control to drain and, can hear the motor running; you have a clog under the pump screen in the back of the Dish Washer preventing the pump impeller from turning
if you hear nothing: reset the house circuit breaker.
to fix: while the DW is on turn off the DW house circuit breaker then remove the pump screen and, remove the broken glass etc. from the pump then: repower and, test.

Sounds as if the disposal may not be completly clear. Run the disposal fo few seconds with water running thru to make sure draining properly and clear.

This issue can be caused by:

* Water is not hot enough.
* Be sure you are using dishwasher soap recommended by the manufacturer. Also, if the dishwasher soap is old, it will not clean the dishes properly. Try with a new one.
* The pump (no the drain pump) of the dishwasher is broken, so there is not enough water pressure from the nozzles.

After checking all above the dishwasher doesn't clean properly, it may have a part broken and you may need to request repairs for the dishwasher.

You need to check to see if the drain line runs from the dishwasher pump to either a "T" on your kitchen sink drain or if it connects directly to the garbage disposal. Either connection is okay. However, water can run downhill from either connection to your dishwasher. To prevent dirty water from your sink or garbage disposal from running downhill to the dishwasher, you may have to install a dishwasher air gap. This can be purchased at a appliance parts store or a home improvement store like a Home Depot or Lowes. It is a "Y" shaped device that should be installed above the dishwasher drain line connection under the sink. As water will not run up hill, you need to make sure that the Air Gap is installed higher than the drain line's connection under the sink. 4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer/control board
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

The drain hose is supposed to go from the garbage disposal to a high point under the sink in back to keep the water from gravity draining into the dishwasher when it shuts off.
