I have a NX7010 and have had it since new. The problem is the computer will load up and then at different times will restart. I have replaced the harddrive and reloaded all software. It will start in safe mode and appears to run OK. This constant restarting does not allow anything to be done on the computer.
I had the exact same problem and managed to fix it by ensuring that i always have a usb device plugged into the notebook. A small usb flash drive seems to be doing the job... Hope this helps.
If your pc runs ok in safe mode, then i would suspect that one of the drivers are suspect, so i would go to the compaq site and update all the drivers for your system, as you may have inadvertantly installed one of the windows generic drivers when you have updated via Microsoft. go to the site below and enter your operating system and download all the drivers for your notebook and install http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=380681&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodSeriesId=380679&prodTypeId=321957

My nx7010 does this as well. I have replaced hard disk and ram. It does the same whether on battery or mains power. I have reinstalled using the original disks and drivers. Could it be a hardware problem?
my system couldnot strart/boot, no display. None of the keys r not functioning, even cant open the CD drive.
