Question about Sony KP-48S75 48" Rear Projection Television
I have a 1998 projection that worked fine until now. The screen had color bands momentarily and went off completely. Looking inside, it is smoking at C514 - a small round component. It does this as soon as the set is plugged in - without having to turn on the power. Having experience with electronics, can someone give instructions on what this is and what parts/steps are neeed for me to repair it? I don't want to haul it to a repair shop to have them charge hundreds for a 10 year old set. Thanks
Hello All,
The component you are talking about is not a diode, it is a capacitor, and if it is burning it has shorted, which means that it needs to be replaced. You will need a schematic and a multimeter. Now since you all thought that this component was anything but a capacitor, I would not suggest that you attempt repairs on your own, because this section is dangerous, and can kill you if you are not careful. I would suggest that all of you get a qualified TV technician to examine your sets and affect repairs on it.
I hope this helps,
Thank you,

Same problem that ashbeth has. Looks like some type of small round possibly blue diode has burnt inside the set
Having the same problem as ashbeth. It looks like a small round possibly blue diode has burnt on the power cord side of the circuit board about half way towards the front of the TV.
Tkanks Brett
you plug it in and it run for few moments then turns off off and wont turn back on you unplug it and plug back in it turns on has some lines running through screen then turns off sounds like is surgeing the power a little higher then turns off wont turn back on unless you unplug
on mine im not showing any burnt things and it does turn on for about 25 seconds starts to have lines run through the screen and then it turns off and wont turn back on
