Measure the temp of the air blowing out. It should be 20 degrees lower than the intake air at the filter. If not, we need to dig deeper.

yes the side vents need to be outside the window and if they aren't - the unit will not cool correctly.

Hope this helps.

Room does not cool down

It may be low on freon or have a leak, I'm not sure if that particular unit has Service Ports on it to enable a recharge, consult your Owner's Manual for any Troubleshooting Tips. www.goldstar.com

Does not cool room.

Goldstar WG5000 air conditioners use an R22 refrigerant. A charge kit containing the gauges needed to properly fill the unit, and the refrigerant tank/cartridge can be purchased to fill the air conditioner.

it shouldnt run for that long if it is sized right for the room in the first place. Does it not come back on after it runs for 30 to 40 mins?

This sounds like a filter problem or a dirty evaporator. Open the fron panel and see if the pre filter, filter, and or evaporator are dirty.
