I called Sprint tech support. With the battery in, hold the red power
button down until the screen comes on that asks you if you're sure you
want to reset your Treo (you will lose all information but hopefully
you're like me and synch it frequently with your desktop.) I reset it
and then synched it with my desktop and got almost all my info back -
just had to redo email passwords and some settings. It was easy.
The Centro and Treo are virtually identical. Have you tried reinstalling the applications from scratch on the Centro (vs. relying on Palm synch to automatically synch all applications)?
What is happening with the Sync? Does your PC and the Palm Desktop Manager recognize your TREO 600? If not, the issue may be that somehow the driver for your device was removed. I would suggest upgrading to the latest version of the Palm Desktop Manager and try plugging in your TREO 600 again and try synching.
You also have to make sure that the setting on the Palm Desktop Manager is the same as the type of cable you are using. If it is a USB cable, have that setting on your PC's Palm Desktop Manager Hotsync settings.
You may be used to PocketPC ActiveSync.
HotSync is an asynchronous synch model - you synch upon demand but not continuously. Pocket PC devices synch all the time while in the cradle. There are advantages to both models.
If you want to synch a Palm OS device, you need to press the button. There are some extra appliactions available on www.palmgear.com that will force your device to synch upon a schdule.
Simplest method for 'switchers':
Assume that your Treo 600 has the data you need (it does but you are focusing on your Palm Desktop in your question).
Install the Palm Desktop software again using the CD but this time, choose the option to synchronize with Outlook during the installation process. This will switch the synchronization to Treo <-> Outlook instalead of Treo<->Palm Desktop. Assuming your Treo is recently synched with Palm Desktop, this will merge the data you have in the Treo with that of your Outlook profile.
In a nutshell, make sure you have a recent synch to your PC of the 600.
Install the Treo 650 desktop software
Synch to the username of the 600
Your are done.
You should rename the Treo 600 or hard reset it (you will get data corruption if you synch two devices with the same username to one PC).
If you are paranoid, you can make a backup copy of your c:\program files\palm\ folder to begin with. This contains most of your settings and extra software on the 600. As you are an Outlook user, your personal data is probably in a PST file or it is stored in Exchange.
