This normally happens when the c partition is not formatted or there is no primary partition, so when you insert the cdrom you should get the option to format the drive or set up the primary partition. The only other problem can be if you are using an SATA drive and you have not pressed the relevent F6 key on the start of the installation for SCSI drive support at which point you will be asked for drivers.

How to change your winxp sp2 to sp3

there is some games you can't play in winxp sp2, like gta IV online.
you have to reinstall or format your computer just to turn your operating system in winxp sp3, just to play this game. do'nt waste your time to format or reinstall your hard drive just follow this quick step

Step 1: Run Regedit by Clicking on Start -> Run , type in regedit and press enter
Step 2: Make a backup of your registry (just in case)
Step 3: Browse to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlWindows"
Step 4: Modify the value of "CSDVersion" from "0x00000200" (SP2) to the Windows XP SP3 value of "0x00000300"
Step 5: Close registry editor
Step 6: Reboot
Step 7: Start GTA and freakin enjoy it already!

Loss hard disc capacity

Did you happen to re-install XP before this happened? WinXP prior to SP1 can only "see" HD's up to 127G, so that might cause your problem...make sure SP1 or SP2 is installed, or try Partition Magic and see if that helps.

Downgrading from vista to xp sp2

I know this problem, The HDD is a SATA disk, win XP setup cannot identify a SATA controller on it's own you need to load the driver (from a disk) so you may need to download it first. I think this is the correct link http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-51521-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3369431&os=228&lang=en extract the files and burn to a CD or Floppy then run win XP setup by booting from CD you should see in the begining of win XP setup from CD it prompt you to press (I think) F2 to add RAID or SCSI Controllers, (this prompt is at the bottom of the screen) Then follow the propmts to load from the disk you made earlier. you should be able to select the controller from a list. (short list) you should then be able to continue and hopefully Win XP setup should now be able to see your HDD and give you choices about which partition (as per normal) you want to remove all partitions before installing winXP (you can then make whatever partitions you wish) Hope this helps

Hard disk failure

Hi, assuming the hdd won't finish a format, it is possible that some sectors are damaged. If you still want to try and use the hdd even with these defects, you can try and partition the hdd. Guesstimate at what point the hdd stops responding and really guess where the defects end. With this info, partition the hdd into 3 with the middle containing the defective sectors. Format only the first and third partitions. For simplicity, Win98 might be easier to work with rather than XP. Hope this be of some help. Do post again and let us know how things turn up.
