You must create a folder named PS3 and inside the PS3 folder create another that is named UPDATE. Save the update file into the UPDATE folder. Be sure to make the folder names in CAPS

As a last resort you could copy the full card to a computer and then delete the pictures on the card and use that again.

This is all I can suggest from here.

In my case the problem was that the USB device did not re-mount after the PS3 restarted.
Try this:
Start the backup restore process. Remove the USB device
sometime after the PS3 starts formatting Once the PS3 has restarted, re-attach the USB device. Wait for a while to allow the device to mount
(about 15-30 seconds) before pressing the PS button to continue!
Dear, You can do then please !. Check the same Memory Stick on another PC (if possible then of same configuration as your PC) 2. Make sure your Pc has Updated antivirus.
If both are Ok then follow the steps 1.Backup the Memory Stick data on other PC. 2. Format the Memory Stick. 3. Paste the data back to the Memory Stick. It will solve your problem.
on the memory stick you need to make files, starting with PS3, then the name of where the file is on the PS3 consoll e.g game data should have GAME DATA

The only thing you can do is get it replaced or fixed, unfortunately. Take it to wherever you got it with the reciept and they should be able to either replace it or send it back to Sony to get it fixed. If you want to keep all of your data, you'll need to get it fixed - but you can copy all your saved games onto a USB device if you want to (I'd recommend doing this whatever you do, just in case something happens).
maybe you didnt download the update data to the memory stick, maybe you downloaded it to your pc. Next time download the update data to the memory stick and not the pc.
I update my Playstation I update from a memory card reader and have never had a problem. Only 2 times it wasn't recognized, but that's because I wasn't doing it right. I went back to the library next night and did it again and it worked. It sounds like you did it correct if the URL was PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP. I used a Sony pro duo card insert into my reader, then when I get home I pull out the card, put it in it's Standard Size Memory Stick Pro adapter and slide it into my card slot on my PS3 and it worked fine, no problems. When there was a problem, it was because I wasn't entering the folder names correctly. Just remember to use all upper case letters and do in this order PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP. Make sure to save the file name in the update folder. I've never update via computer. There's not suppose to be the word folder after UPDATE or PS3UPDAT.PUP. The URL should read like this in your address bar: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP
hope this helps
John
