Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

If you see a very dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

MPC 2550. What is error code sc 865 01?

SC865 (HDD access error) is displayed when the power is turned ON, and SC819 (kernel stopped) is displayed when the power is turned OFF and ON.
Some broken files may be left in the HDD image disk space.
Repair by initializing the HDD image disk space (SP5-832-002).

2. plug your HDD into another laptop in anyway(usb or enclosure)
3. Make your HDD bootable with DOS mode

My GX3 does not 'see' the hard drive

Either a pin is bent on the HDD and is'nt plugging in or the HDD controller is bad.The HDD may also be faulty. If you have the HDD in it's caddy with it secured properly and the pins are straight it should detect it.Also make sure there isn't a jumper on the HDD pins.If everything is in place correctly and it does'nt show.it's probably the HDD.

External HDD not recognized after a time of inactivity

you are guessing right... this is caused due to system going in standby suspend mode which powers down the HDD ... and when the system comes back from suspend mode... the win vista thinks no external HDD is attached to the system ... thereby removing it from the devices list.

right click desktop select properties and select screensaver tab and then power options. select turn off the hard disks and select never. this is for winxp .. but it will be similar to this procedure in vista.

My mpc hard drive freezes

Sounds like the hard drive either has bad sectors or has corrupted data and it needs to be formatted.
If checking for errors or formatting doesn't help, you may need to replace the drive. Depending on the hard drive that is installed, it may be getting to the end of useable life cycle or has damaged sectors and causes the MPC to lock up. It may also be that the controller board on the drive is failing.

Check the drive either with the built in utility or connect it to a computer and use a non destructive test utility like HDD Regenerator that runs from a bootable CD on a PC.

Cheers and good luck.

Blank screen on start up

It means that your system cannot detect Windows on your hard drive. Check the connections inside if you can. If everything is connected properly, then your hard drive is probably is at fault. You can do a disk check in dos but may not be accurate.
