Unit was working fine, then froze when I turned the power off and back on gives the unknown disc prompt no matter what disc I put in, a factory set movie or video I had already finalized on my LG.
You need to clean the reading head. When doing this you need to be very careful about static electricity. And never run the unit with anything more than the lid off.
First there are 3 screws on each side that take a side cover off.
Second there are 2 more screws that hold the lid on. Once the screws are removed lift the back of the lid first and tilt forward to clear the front switches.
Third; Remove the top of the DVD unit, to do this there are two screws and two tabs that hold the top on the DVD unit.
Fourth; To clean I used a vacum, but you can use canned air. But be very careful. These are very delicate parts.
Do not let the vacum touch any of the electronic parts. Do not do this with the unit plugged in. Before you test the Player put the top of the DVD unit back on. You can leave the main lid off at this point.
Good luck,

same problem sent to Lg they charged me 69.00 for labor. It has happened again and again they are charging me the 69.00. This unit is just now 1 yr. seems like it only last 6 months. Tried cleaning but doesn't work.
I have a similar problem with the disc error. The first message said "making a menu." The disc wouldn't play or eject and the message wouldn't go away after over an hour. The unit wouldn't turn off and I unplugged it, hoping it would reset itself. When I plugged it back in, the disc ejected itself. I tried it again, and it said "unknown disc error." Thanks for the comments. I'll spend the money on another unit, different brand and not bother with trying to have it serviced.
My LG froze up and now says Unknow Disc. I have only had it 6 months and it has been ejecting any of my DVDs. Please Help
Won't play DVD's anymore. I put a DVD in and it gets stuck in "reading" mode. I can hear the disc turning but it never gets going fast enough to start. I did manage to get a CD to play. It's not very old and hasn't been used hard. Some of the DVD's are brand new and I don't know what to do. I've spent good money for this and went with a brand that I thought would be reliable. I'm disappointed to say the least. HELP ME! I have a two year old and she would love to watch a few videos once in a while.
I had my LG LHY-518 DVD Combi Receiver for just over a year when it suddenly stopped recognizing any type of disc I inserted. Not only that...now the remote no longer works and just recently the volume control on the unit sometimes goes crazy...volume goes down when I try to turn it up. What a piece of junk! The LG service center suggested I try to reset the unit, but that did not work. In case this might help someone else, the procedure is: unplug unit and wait until all lights have gone off. Push the power button and hold for 20 seconds. Turn unit back on (and hope for the best)! $69 is just for initial labor and diagnosis of problem. Parts and shipping will be extra!
My DVD player on my LG-LHY-518, will not play movies with 2 sides. I took the unit apart and cleaned it with Duster, but it still reads "unknown disc" ' and spits the disc back out. P.S. I checked the disc and tried again also.
