I have a Lacie 1TB Big Disk Extreme. It has recently developed a loud regular whirring noise, that goes on and off every few seconds. What should I do? Thanks! Adrian

The irregular clicking or chunking sound usually indicates that your hard drive is suffering from physical damage. immediately backup your data, your hard disk will die soon.

This problem can be caused by the following:

  • Head Crash
  • Bad Sectors
  • Mechanical Faults

If your hard disk is under warranty then you contact your manufacturer.
Hard disk drive occasionally produces a whirring sound when it searches for a file which is heavily fragmented. This is caused by the spinning platters as the read-write heads zoom back and forth to access the sectors where the data is stored. It is important to distinguish the whirling sound from the clicking sound. This whirring sound can be reduced by periodically defragmenting your hard drive. Defragmenting reorganizes the scattered data on the hard drive to make files and programs run faster. It relocates the commonly accessed files to the beginning of the hard disk where data can load at a faster rate.

HI please I really need help! I was using my LaCie hard disk one day and then the HD started doing a weird sound (tick-tick). Now every time the pc is on and i plug in the hard disk it does the ticking...

Hello,
your drive suffered a head crash and the only way to get the data from it now is with a Data recovery center. If you do not need the data and your drive is under warranty, contact LaCie to get a replacement.

My iMac does not recognize the Lacie 1tb big disk extreme external hard drive. No icon appears.

Hello,
the first step will be to verify your power supply. When it is plugged to the wall power outlet, it should be silent (no hissing or high pitch noise) and the green light should be on on the power supply.. If it is not the case, replacing it might solve your problems.
Second step is to verify if it is an interface problem. Try using a different port on the drive.
If no success, start Disk Utility and look to the left if you have any mention of a drive of 1TB. If you do, the partition of your drive might be corrupted. You can try running First Aid from Disk utility if its available, else you will need to try a partition repair software or a Data recovery program.
There are a few available that you can get a free copy to see if the data is available before you buy.

Connect the LACIE.

Click Manage
Expand the Storage branch of the tree
Click Disk Management (local)
Does it show a bar-graph for the LACIE?

My "t " bird hard drive fell onto floor from about

The '1TB' device is 10 to a large power.
The '930GB' is 2 to a much-larger power.

Since '1GB' is 1,073,741,824 bytes,
multiplying 930 times 1,073,741,824 is equal to 1TB.

So, your device is 100% empty -- all 930GB are "free" space.

I have a Lacie big disk ethernet that has quit responding. it sounds like the hard drive is trying to initialize but then fails. then it spools down and starts over again. can someone help?

The interface board, inside the case, has failed. If the drive is in warranty you will have to take it back. If not open up the case and try another caddy.

Lacie ED mini v2 won't start up.

I had the same problem twice, but it was the power adapters each time that were causing the problem. It wasn't the unit itself. Lacie replaced the power adapters and it worked fine.
