Re:
I'm afraid it looks like this machine will only record on DVD-R disks not DVD R.

This is a comon one, RW Disks do all look similkar but, they do have diferent letters at the end of the name and if you have not bought the correct coded disk, your RW wil not recognize is. Sugest you read your manual and check what exact disks you need and check the pack you have bought.
try a single disk, but make sure format is not (-r or -rw; but +r or+rw )negative is mostly for computers, and positive is mostly for dvds and such; should find single at walgreens or wal-mart.
You may need dvd- disks instead! ( it usually one or the other!) and if your player does take a DVD+ you might have to change brands of disks ( I know this sounds stupid but all disks are not created equal! and do not work in all players!

Normally, I'd advise cleaning the IR lens with a disc-based lens cleaner, but at only six uses, the problem could be controller board or misaligned laser/lens assembly.
Could be something worked loose or skew disc jammed in drive.
Have you tried DVD's from just one pack, one type, or other types?
Why I ask - I had this problem on my PC's DVD-writer.
It turned out that a full (new) pack of DVD's was faulty.
As a test, try initialize same (suspect) disks on another recorder?
I am using Dvd - R and I am still gettinty the same error check disc getting very annoying
