Simply said you require a DVR station or Audio/Video travel cable. On the DVR just simply plug in your composite cable from OUT the satellite/cable box or whichever source your recording from to IN on the DVR station. The a/v travel cable is a little easier to hook up. Then just select the VideoCorder icon.

Where is the camera button. and i cant record or take pictures

The Archos 504 doesnt fit a camera. You must purchase it as an addon at Archos store or at newmp3technology.com and connect it to the device.

Archos screen only

solution found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much for the support of the Archos team. here is what i did to repair my 504
if your "reset" button doesn't help at all, this is what you'll do.

If you power on the unit by pressing and holding the TV/LCD button and power
button simultaneously the unit will boot into a recovery screen. Once in this
screen choose "Repair Disk" and follow the on screen instructions.

When prompted, please place the following file into the 'root directory' of
the unit:

http://update.archos.com/4/a504/a504_r1.6.53/a504.aos

before i found this solution, i've already given up on my 504, but now it's back!!!! REBIRTH!!!
thanks once again to Tony H from Archos Technical Support

Archos 504 dvr shuts down when I plug it into the tv and there is no sound.

The same thing happens to me. I've noticed that it is on the dvds and vhs recordings (ie, copy protected) that this happens. The other files (downloaded from internet, tv, etc) play fine. I think it has something to do with copy-protection that allows files to be saved to device, but not transmitted out. This allows you to save and view your commercial recordings on the Archos, but not let the program to be sent to a recording device such as a dvd recorder.
