How do I release the DVD drive from the motherboard on an Ibm A31? I can't seem to find the release mechanism to slide out the drive so I can reach the screws to the Ultrabay.

Actually there is a plastic catch that must be released by disassembling the thinkpad. Look for a screw that might be holding it in and take the screw out. Some times there is a screw that prevents the latch from sliding out.

This is bad news, the smell you have noticed from the ThinkPad is most likely caused by an electrical short in the power circuit and the cost of repair would not be a cost effective solution, a replacement motherboard may not be available because of the age of this model ThinkPad.
You maybe able to retrieve your data from the hard drive by removing the hard drive and connect to an USB hard drive adapter then connect it to a working computer's USB port. This computer will see this drive as an external USB hard drive and you can copy the data off this hard drive.

This drive could be faulty or it needs reseating.
Remove this drive and insert it into the laptop again. There is a small slide button next to the drive near the RH corner, slide it and a drive tab will pop out. pull the tab and the drive will slide out, press it back in and the tab. Bootup the laptop and put a CD or DVD into the drive to see if it works again, if not then it most likely is faulty.
If possible put this drive into another A31 laptop to test.

if your OS is Win XP then UR MBR has gone currupt . You will have to reload the windows or at least repair it.
1. in repair you wont lose the data but in fresh loading of OS in C drive will delete your data in My documents and at desk top.
2. if there is some important data there then first retrive it by making ur drive as slave in other PC and then do the format.
