Cannot connect to Remote Desktop at Work From Home
Ok, long story. I have a Dell with XP Home, and a borrowed work laptop with XP professional. I am using Cisco VPN 5.0 to connect to my work network (I get the little lock so all is good), but then when I go to Remote Desktop I get (Cannot connect ). I cannot get VNC to connect either (failed to connect to server). I cannot connect with either the laptop or my home PC. I called in a professional who said my home computer was having issues. He was able to take his laptop with Cisco 4.8 and log onto my desktop! He copied over the 5.0 and tried- it failed. My modem is your standard AT&T issue Siemens 4100.
While I have no problems having my computer fixed (or replaced), it still doesn't explain why he could connect with 4.8 and not 5.0. Has anyone heard of problems with the 5.0, and can the 4.8 be loaded onto XP? I understand most new PC's come with Vista, and Cisco VPN doesn't support it.
I need some good direction. I am not afraid to pay for service, but I feel like I am just getting run around in circles. Since a laptop with an earlier version of Cisco connected through my modem, I have to wonder if the modem doesn't work with the 5.0.
Any ideas are welcome, but please note I am not very PC knowledgeable.
Most of these problems seem to be from firewalls or not forwarding the port. It might be that 4.8 uses a different port then 5.0 and the port is not open on your computer or router. Check what ports both versions use and make sure these ports are open in both your router and/or PCs firewall. Same goes for port forwarding. Make sure your router is forwarding the correct port to the PCs IP address. Let me know...Most of these problems seem to be from firewalls or not forwarding the port. Re: Cannot connect to Remote Desktop at Work From Home
There is a ver 5.06 of the client out by now, it is even win7 compatible, perhaps try upgrading to that version.
yes, there have been issues reported with early 5.0x and he was correct to test an older stable version. The VPN tunnels work the same way with either version, therefore I would rule out your modem to be an issue.

Even though Windows XP and 7 are different versions of Windows, you can still connect a computer running Windows 7 to an XP computer using Remote Desktop Connection. Remote Desktop Connection is a utility in Windows that allows you to log in to a remote computer directly from your computer's desktop. However, before you can use the utility on your Windows 7 computer, you must enable it on the Windows XP computer. To connect to the Windows XP computer, you also need to know the XP computer's name.
Instructions
Enable Remote Desktop on the Windows XP Computer
Click "Start" on the Windows XP computer, and then right-click "My Computer."
Click "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
Click the "Remote" tab, and then click the "Allow Users to Connect Remotely to This Computer" check box.
Click "OK" to confirm the change when prompted on the pop-up window. Click "OK" on the open windows to close them.
Connect to the Windows XP Computer
Click "Start" on the Windows 7 computer, and then type "Remote Desktop Connection" in the search box. Press "Enter."
Click "Remote Desktop Connection" from the results list.
Type the name of the XP computer in the "Computer" box, and then click "Connect" to connect to the XP computer.

Check for a 2nd game cd in the case sometimes they have it hidden on the opposite side of the current cd. Iv got a few games that have up to 6 cds for installation because of the intense graphics. Sim Life Stories might be the same assuming.... because it is quite new... hope this helps if not then try updating your cd rom driver that might help as well
By default in Vista Remote Desktop is disabled. Steps to enable Remote desktop:
1. Press Window Key + Break Key and it will display the system properties. 2. On the system properties click on the remote tab and on the Remote Desktop Options tick Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop. 3. Click Apply and OK
Make sure domain settings to your server are correct on the notebook computer. These settings are located in the control panel of the system setting.
Whats the operating system of your server?
Make sure the firewall in windows security is turned off too. Sometimes that thing sneaks up on you.
I haven't used the home edition of Vista but another reason why it might not be working is because it isn't the business version. Microsoft might have added extra security to prevent the home version from connecting to a server. I know we use the business version of Vista at work and it is working that way on the intranet server without a problem.
