It roars all the time. It was quiet when it was new but just got louder and louder as the years went by (only 2 years old). I 'felt' the machine for the noise and it sounds like it's coming out of the motor itself. For the money I wouldn't expect to have to replace a motor already. How long should they last?
It usually gets louder as the filters clog up and eventually burns out. Try replacing all the filters and giving the bin and the vortex generator a good blow out with compressed air. Fluff can stay inside and cause the motor to strain hence the increased noise.
It must still be under warranty -used to be 3 but now 5 years -so if it doesn't improve contact Dyson and they will repair it free of charge.

I got rid of this vacuum some time ago as it was too much of a hassle to replace the motor bearings.
