I turn on the computer, lights light up on the CPU but not the key board and mouse. Computer screen stays black but with "No signal". The fan runs constantly.
The computer was not moved at all. Was just used the night before to do some web searching. We run a virus scan everytime we go to shut the computer down. Everything was working fine at that time. The computer was not moved at all. Was just used the night before to do some web searching. We run a virus scan everytime we go to shut the computer down. Your desktop tower/cpu tower has to be turned on to give those hardware power. If you can't turn on your computer then that means you have an internal problem with your motherboard etc. If everything else powers up except for the screen/monitor your video is dead. Find someone you know that has an extra monitor and hook it up to your tower, if it works then it's not your video but the monitor instead.
A good place to start is to find the reset jumper on the mother board and jumper it. Next you can try disconnecting everything attached to the mother board except the cpu and the heat sink fan. Turn the computer on and you should get a post error beep. If your computer stays running then you will want to attache everything one piece at a time starting with your the keyboard and mouse then the video card so you can see the POST (power on self test) on the screen. Keep adding components until it stops and you have found the problem. If this doesn't solve your problem, you should test your power supply. A bad power supply can and has caused the same problem. If you can't find a detailed test procedure for the PS let me know and I will give you the steps. The cpu power on is dependent upon getting proper voltage from the PS. Good luck.
You can try downloading the Windows 7 Advisor from the Microsoft website. It will give a comprehensive information about the hardware compatibility from your computer if it will work on Windows 7.
It sounds like you have a board that is not booting at all. Remove everything from the board except the system RAM and CPU and switch it on. If it boots now, shut it down and then replace each individual item one at a time, booting the machine after each item is refitted/connected until you fit something that prevents the machine from booting. Pay special attention to system RAM sticks by removing them/it and refitting it as bad connections in the RAM socket can also cause a boot failure but removing and refitting the sticks usually cures this issue.
The backlight inverter board may be bad, or worst case will be bad lamp. You should look to see if the cable comes off the inverter board first. You may learn maore here: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/category/5-gateway-laptops/

you need to replace the power supply. The fan sound is the fan for the power supply and not the computer. for cheap parts or used goto headgap's. They know what you need and probably even help you replace it yourself.
