If you have a CD changer connected it is quite easy, if not I can't imagine a solution.
With a CD changer you need a cinch-Y-cable and a cinch-to-stereo jack adaptor. You connect these two to you ipod and the second port of the cinch-Y-cable to your CD changer.
Then you can burn a CD with no sound on it, but it must not be empty! You can use NERO Waveeditor to record "nothing" for the length of one CD and then burn this file.
If you play this CD in the CD changer and press the play button on your ipod you'll hear your itunes. If you play another CD in your CD changer while listening to your ipod you'll hear both sounds.

Have fun.

I have a male ipod connector in my car to attach an ipod to. I do not have an ipod but would like to be able to connect a standard mp3 player to this connect point via a jack plug. Please can you advise if...

If your Sony has female RCA Aux inputs, then you can use that going headphone out of MP3 player to the RCA inputs. You won't be able to view or controll any other player from the head unit except an iPod.

How do I connect an external MP3 player, such as an iPod, to my head unit?

you would need to purchase an aftermarket devise to send an rf signal to the fm tuner- there are also fm modulators the have a direct connection to to antenna plug on the rear or the radio- your radio does not have any jack for a direct connection or controls for it to operate an ipod or mp3
