When I turn on the TV the picture is bright and looks normal. After about 5 seconds the screen changes and becomes less bright and a light gray box apperas in the middle but does not fill the full screen, about 75% . Any time you press a button on the reomote it switchs to the normal bright screen only to chnage back to the gray box screen after 5 seconds. What is going on?

The text mode in the closed caption is turned on.Turn off the closed caption.
I don't have the schematic in front of me, so, I will wing it. There may be a button on the remote that says CC, if so then use that button to turn it off, if not then go to the service menu and you may have to search a bit.
Either way it's an easy fix and you can do it yourself.
If you can't find it, then, reply and I will give better instructions when I get into my shop next week.

First, try to plug another source on your T.V. set and let see if it's gonna do the same trouble. If not, this is not the T.V. but the source,( cable box or other) that is defect. If not, Looks like a main board problem, or if you're lucky, a cold joint, (Which i doubt). Sometimes it could also be a bad piece in the power supply but i can not say like that. I would have to make test on it with the service manual. If changing source does not work, i suggest you to see a professionnel. Best of luck. Best regards,
Is it still under warranty? If not I would find a good TV Service Shop and have them check out the power supply as there more than likely a 'Capacitor' much like a battery that is going bad. Blessings, A/V Media Guy

On the inside of the TV, on the flyback transformer there should be two controls. Turn the one that says "screen" very slowly clockwise while looking at the pix. The pix should get brighter as you turn it up- if you go to far you will see lines in the pix or the TV may shutdown.
This sudden changes in brightness are caused by the change in voltage inside the tv,not in the outlet in the wall but inside the set,The changes are an indication something is going wrong and it needs to be corrected, the set does have a brightness limiter but it only works when the set wants to get brighter than normal,You need the assitance of a servicer to correct this problem.
