It sounds like a timing issue,,,at the front of the cd underneath is a cam and a bar with teeth, gently push or pull the bar so it advances to the maximum position, then make sure the cd drawer is closed and plug the unit in to test.....afterward reassemble the unit , also do not look into laser beam, blindness will occur...

You may need to take apart you PS2 and rotate the white gear about 1/8 of a turn or so and test with just the DVD lid on before you put it back together. If you still get the error try another 1/8 of a turn and so on. Detailed instructions and pictures can be found here on how to take apart your PS2

My PS2 console remains on the opening menu for browser and system configuration even when I insert a disc, whether it is a DVD or a PS2 game. What can I do to get it to play a game?

The problem is that the laser is not reading the information on the disc. Either the discs are dirty or you need to clean the 'eye' of your laser. i used to have the same problem. all you need to do is go to wal mart or best buy or whatever and get a lens cleaner. it is simply a disc with very small brushes on the bottom. when it spins the brush will quickly wipe the eye clean. Some have a spray to use with the disc. these work a little better. It should only run you 5-10 bucks.

Hope that helps, please rate if it does...thanks.

Ps2 will work

your ps2 isn't reading cause your drive is dying. you can get a lil more out of it by opening the ps2 up, (void your warranty if you have one you will yess....) after flipping the top part of the cover to the side (careful the power and reset button have a cable still connected) you will want to remove the screws on the dvd rom, 4 lil tiny screws. then remove the cover. you will see the lens and behind that a White GEAr about the size of quarter. mark the teeth that meet the metal clip on the left hand side of it with a marker. then twist the gear clockwise slowly (click click click click) then you will hear a sound and the laser will drop down. now do 2 to four clicks clockwise and then put the thin cover back on the ps2 and boot it up and try a game out. (please place cover back over dvd rom area for the dvd's fly off and then the laser will melt a hole in your brain.) its' basically readjusting the laser to read the cds. the blue ones are hard really hard to get it to ready but silvers and ps1 are easiest. so if it dosen't read the dvd or cd shut off the system take the thin cover back off and do 2 to 4 more clicks clockwise and repeat until the cd reads.

Clicking noise

Yuk, you're not gonna like the solution to this but you have one of two things going on. That clicking noise you're hearing is the laser eye hitting the disk cuz it's havin problems reading it. There are a couple of reasons that would cause this. 1.) The laser lens is out of alignment. 2.) The lens itself is either damaged or the potentiometer pots on the back of the lens itself (if the ps2 dvdrom drive is taken apart and the eye is removed and flipped upside down there are two screws on the back of the eye, one controls laser voltage for dvds one controls laser voltage for CD) needs adjusting.

If you're lucky it's 1, that's a pretty easy but time consuming fix. You take the cover off the PS2. You power on the PS2 open the dvd-rom via the button on your console then manually power off the PS2 via the switch on the back, thus leaving the dvdrom tray open. You then take the screws off of the top of the dvdrom drive and remove that plate the screws are holding down. You'll see a large COG gear that should appear white in most models. Whether it is white or black there is a allen wrench hole in the center of it, you'll notice. The size of the cog is question is about the size of a 50cent piece(in most models, some it's about the size of a quarter). It's quite large and hard to miss. Get yourself a permanent marker and find some way of marking it's current position so if all else fails you can re-align it back to it's current position. Next get an allen wrench that fits the whole in the center. Here's the time consuming part, Turn that cog (start clockwise) One click (meaning turn it till you feel one click) put a game in, place the plastic lid back on but don't put the screws in and put something on top of the plastic dvd cover to hold if firmly in place and power on the ps2. If the game doesn't load, rinse and repeat this method from the beginning untill you have gone through every single gear notch on the cog. If you're not savvy with written instructions and need pictures to guid you in taredown and identification here's a guide with pics. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1

Now if you've gone through every single gear on that cog and still can't resolve the issue the other steps would include adjusting the voltage on the back of the PS2 lens. I have created a solution for someone else with a similar problem that can be found here http://www.fixya.com/support/t1122813-ps2_modded_trouble_reading_dvdrs

You first use that guide to identify your PS2 version then you go to the link provided within that guide and follow the directions to set your voltage correctly.

If neither of these solutions solved your issue then your PS2 laser lens is damaged totally and needs to be replaced. You can either replace the lens itself (about 20-40bucks) or replace the entire DVD-ROM unit (not needed, but some people do this if they don't feel like dealing with alignment)

Hope that was of some assistance,
Good Luck

Well brntaffy first off a liitle more info is needed. when you say wont read disc have you tried any or all of the media formats the ps2 supports? music cd, dvd movie, ps1 games, ps2 cd, ps2 dvd. If it plays some formats but not others then the cd eye angle alignment is probably not correct. Is your ps2 a slim or the older thick model? if it is a new slim ps2 you can try the top lens instruction below, but if your ps2 is the older thick model, unless you are at least somewhat of a tech savy type you may not want to attemped any of the other stuff at all. regardless it could be any one or a combination of the following:

1. Most commonly the laser lens (or eye) needs to be cleaned.

before trying any of this yourself read everything first and then have a place to work setup. This place should be clean, good bright lighting, with plenty of room, where you won't get disturb before finishing. and oh yeah wash your hands.

top lens: (if you have a thick ps2 model you will need to remove the outer case(be careful of ribbon cable connection for reset and eject button assembly, if you cant figure out how to remove the button assembly, just set the outer case upside down right next to thebottom) and then remove the top plastic cover of the cd/dvd unit) NEVER touch the eye/lens with your finger- you have oils that will cause it to attract dust/dirt. With a q-tip very lightly soaked in isopropyl rubbing alcohol, use as little pressure as possible, using a circular motion either clockwise or counter clockwise (do not change direction), rub the top lens about 20 to 30 complete revolutions then (without the alcohol) repeat the same method using the dry end of the q-tip

I say this again unless you are a some what tech savy type of person you may not want to attemp anything further.

bottom lens: if you are going to try this or anything furthur, PLEASE BEFORE you disassemble anything!, you need to be prepared with a few items. an artists paint brush- as small and very fine bristles as you can find the length of the bristles should be at least a quarter inch or longer. a few small wooden toothpicks, a can of silicone lubricant , q-tips , a fine point sharpie, oh yeah a regular sized phillips screwdriver and a small phillips tech driver , depending on which one of the, 13 or so different, ps2 models you have, you might find a few other small tools that could come in handy (an allen wrench or that just right size flat blade screwdriver, ect.).
okay back to how to clean the bottom lens: you will need to remove the laser eye assembly. to do this the guide bar the laser eye assembly is attached to will need to be removed, first mark the possistion of the cd eye angle adjustment knob(s) with the sharpie there will be 1 or 2 knobs depending on what model you have, the knob(s) control the height of one end of the guide bar(s). This needs to be very accruate so when you reassemble, the cd eye angle alignment is as you found it, because if the angle isn't right you won't be able to play all the formats the ps2 supports. either a flat metal spring or a srew or something similar holding one end of the bar needs to come out. be very careful of the ribbon cable attached to the bottom of the cd eye assembly, if you look at the plastic connector the ribbon goes into, very gently use something small, a sharp toothpic or tiny flat blade tech driver, to release each side of the plastic connector. this will release the ribbon cable. Now that you are holding the laser eye assembly very very carefully using a toothpic to hold the floating eye up enough so you can get access to the second stationary lens undernieth with your paint brush, brush the bottom lens several times to get any dust.
Now put back together . use a fresh q-tip to apply silicone lubricant to to the guide bars and the worm gear. the worm gear is what moves the laser eye assembly back and forth. check the gear grooves for any foreign material dust lent ect. remember to get the alignment knobs back exactly how you marked them. do the top lens: instruction. reassemble dvd top cover and outer case.

Now if you have done everything just how I said and your ps2 is still not reading any format then you have a more serious problem that will take more time to explain than I have right now but if anyone request this or needs more detail in the above I will find time to explain further possible solutions! lol

hope this info is useful!

Eek Playstation 2 Slim wont read any disc!!

OK. First of all, put any disc in and turn on the PS2. Push the spot shown here down with something about the size of the TV end of the AV cable.

Watch what it does. Does it stop spinning? If so, see this pic
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r96/Daiv_The_Goriya/PS2problem.jpg
  1. This keeps the disc from spinning when the cover is open.
  2. push this down while following the instructions from the first pic. Does the disc work?
  3. There's usually a small object that pushes #2 down. Chances are it broke off.

This piece here is what broke off on my PS2 as seen in the previous image. If you can find some way to glue it back on, you should be back in business.

Disc read error

To fix this problem, you will need to open your PS2 and re-adjust its lens. To open your PS2, first turn it upside down. Remove the 4 rubber feet and 6 square tabs (circled in the picture) by sliding a flat screwdriver (or something similar) underneath them.
