Tonight my TV went blank during viewing. Then the LED Standby light began blinking 7 times. I called Sony Customer Service and was informed to call a repair shop. What do you suggest might be the issue/resolution?
Mine does the same thing. I called a repair shop today and was told that it has 3 tubes in it and that 2 are bad. Cost is $200 each plus service; Appx. $800. Best bet, get a new tv.

These blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit stage inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power led, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating, to many popular brand TVs and other devices. SUBJECT: Counter measure for Intermittently 5 times standby LED blinking
SYMPTOM: Customer may report that intermittently after AC OFF/ ON (or
Deep Standby/ ON), TV will shut down with LED blinking 5 times. If set
is placed in Standby, then On, symptom will re occur. If AC is removed,
set will work normally when AC restored
CAUSE: Timing mismatch of I2C communication causes interrupt signal
inside TV. This causes TV to shut down with error 'Standby led flashes 5
times'
SOLUTION: This is a user correctable issue -
Where possible, please refer customer to Sony Website -(or ) and search
for relevant model to download correct update. If the unit is in
Workshop, please perform update as per Instructions.
Hi, If its lamp light on tv front that is blinking red then lamp is dead/ broken and need to be replaced. Lamp replacement procedure is easy and written in user mnaual of tv. If it is standby/ power light that is blinking then please count how many times it is blinking after three seconds pause and let me know to diagnose tv problem because it is an error code that has info in its blinking. Thanks.
Five blinks - AKB
circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks
for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function.
Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761
and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on
the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning
up screen A2 slightly.
The self-diagnostic function of the projection TV will cause the STANDBY
light to blink or flash when the television detects an issue. The number of
times the STANDBY light flashes corresponds to a specific issue. As per the two
examples below, some of the issues may be resolved without the need for service.
If the STANDBY light flashes three times in
sequence, the lamp cover is not securely attached. Reattach the lamp cover to
resolve this issue.
If the STANDBY light flashes four times in
sequence, the TV may be overheating. To resolve this issue, ensure that the back
of the TV is well ventilated.
If the flash sequence is not listed above or the light continues to flash,
follow the steps below to perform a power reset:
Turn off the television.
IMPORTANT: For a
projection TV that uses an internal lamp, wait 5 minutes after turning off the
TV to allow the lamp to cool before continuing with the following steps.
Unplug the TV power cord from the electrical outlet.
Let the TV remain without power for 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
NOTE: If the TV is plugged into
a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge
protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved,
the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the TV.
Turn on the television.
NOTE: If the TV does not turn on
immediately, the fan may need to finish its cycle. This is part of the cooling
process for some projection TVs and is normal operation. After the fan turns
off, attempt to turn the TV on again.
If the issue is still unresolved after following all of
the troubleshooting steps, service may be required . Please note the number of times the
STANDBY light flashes and relay that information to the service center.
When Sony TV gets problem it goes to standby as protection mode and LED start flashing. Do you see standby light blinking? There would be 3 seconds interval between blinks so count from pause to pause and let me know. Thanks.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.

Since the TV is still receiving power, the problem is going to be with the TV's mainboard. After you unplugged the TV and plugged it back in, you said the power light went out again, so I assume the standby light wasn't flashing again? The flashing standby light is indicating an error code so my suggestion is to contact Sony for service options regardless if there is a warranty or not because service is the only solution to this situation. Don't forget to provide them the error code or 4 flashes repeating.
