I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. The DVD+RW that came with the computer is a NEC DVD+TW ND-6650A. The computer is about 8 months old. All of a sudden the cd player won't open. The LED light has remained on, but when you push the button, it won't open. The emergency release works. The Device Manager does not show the player at all, and when I tried to manually add it, it wasn't on the list of models for NEC. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
I have the same problem, but my E1505 is just over a year old - no longer under warranty - and I've recently moved to a foreign country, so I can't bring it back anyway. I can't get the DVD out at all. Re:
If it's only 8 months old, then you have atleast 4 months left on your warranty.
The problem will either be the ide controller channel or the dvd drive and firmware has faulted, the same fault probably happens when you have put a dvd in and it wont read or eject.
Return to the place of purchase, where the drive should be replaced or the notebook exchanged.

It may be bad. Has the laptop been damaged? Dropped? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD Rom drives, is it listed? In Start Menu, Computer, Is it listed? Try re installing the DVD rom driver, the MS Vista 32bit drivers can be found here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/vostro-a860
The CD Burner / Player / DVD Burner are all different heads. If the Dell Inspiron E1705 is an older model it is most likely you have reached the end of it's usable life for the CD burner part. If it is new the CD burner is most likely defective and hopefully warrantied. Otherwise these CD/DVD units can be replaced relatively inexpensively (as compared to buying a new laptop).
First I would check all the preferences in the software I was using and make sure everything is set right. If I could find nothing wrong there I would go to the Device Manager, uninstall the drivers and shut down the system. On reboot if it is a plug and play device, Windows should reinstall it. If it is not PnP, go back to the Device Manager an manually reload the driver.
To get to the Device Manager - click Start, right click on My Computer, click on Properties, click on Device Manager tab or link. XP has a tab, Windows 7 has a link.
you might have to uninstall both the dvd/cd + its drivers then reinstall them actually unplug the cd/dvd from its power cable then restart your computer plug it back in your computer should activate found new hardware or control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall hope this helps
I'd get a double layer (dl) drive by Memorex from either Tigerdirect or NewEgg. They always have them on sale and all three of my systems have one installed.
Hi,
see if its recognised in the Device Manager. Start/My computer/Control Panel/System/Device manager.
if so remove or uninstall the Drive.
Physically remove/eject the drive from the Computer. reboot then shutdown. re-insert the Drive. boot computer and see if it,s detected by the system or ( found new hardware Wizard )
re-install any drivers as requested. Installing SP3 shouldn,t do this. unless the drive was actually Virused Or failing already.
in windows xp: go to start then control panel then system then hardware then device manager then remove anythig that even remotely looks lika a DVD drive then: shut down you computer when it restarts xp will look for and, install anything hooked up to it automaticly
Try to use dvd cleaner disk to clean the lens, if it doesnot work, i think you have to replace your drive , this happens with Dell alot. but try to clean it, uninstall then install the driver back and check if its work.
