No picture/sound new batteries, tv turns on, plays for 5-10 seconds and then most of the screen goes black and loses sound.

It sounds like it is loseing signal, check your connections, and make sure you have the correct cable

Capacitors on the power pack are going bad they need to be replaced that should fix the problem.

Sounds like power supply. Probably time for a new tv. You have already got almost 20 years service.

I had the same exact problem.
I removed the bulb and cleaned it. There is a small screen at the top of the bulb and it was covered with dust. Once it was cleaned I replaced the bulb and it solved the problem.
