Question about Canon CanoScan 8400F Flatbed Scanner

Canoscan Won't Scan

I moved the scanner from one place on my desk to another, and unplugged the usb cable in the process. The next time I went to use it it wouldn't scan. I didn't do anything rough with it and I've restarted my mac several times since i re-plugged in the usb cable. When I try to preview it says that either i left in the protective sheet or the lamp is too cold ... i live in san francisco and i didn't put the protective sheet in... any ideas?

I have the same problem with the same message. One day it worked fine the next I got that message about the film sheet or the lamp is too cold. What can we do to fix this problem. I miss my scanner!!

Having the same issue after scanning film successfully, but when setting it to scan a photo again, I get the same message, and it will not scan. Tried turning off/on, making sure the lid is on correctly, etc.

I have the same problem with my 8400f. I moved it across the room and am getting the same error message. I have reinstalled the driver several times. No go. I hooked the scanner up to a Mac that had never had the driver installed before and am getting the same message. I used the scanner successfully a month or so ago. Now nothing.

thats very simple friend, just go back to your system and search for a flat connector called usb with a symbol to make you identify it on the cable of the scanner and on the back of the system

It depends on what you are scanning and what software you are using to scan with and it's settings.

If it was photo and the resolution in the scanner software is cranked up real high, it could take some time.

If the image comes up looking funny, I would check the usb cable.

Is the light on and is it moving?

The "car sound" could be an indication that the scanner is locked. Check the lock switch on the bottom of the scanner. Move the switch back and forth a few times and then leave it in the locked position. Another possibility is that you are scanning heavy items such as books. If too much weight is placed on the scanner glass, then pressure could be enough to prevent the scanning element from moving as it should.

The code 201 sometimes can indicate a power issue...meaning the scanner is not getting enough power. Try connecting the usb cable to a different port on the computer (preferrably directly to the computer and not through a USB hub).

please specify how the machine communicates with computer (network, USB cable, or parallel cable). once this is known I'll be able to tell you how to setup the scanning.

As for the 2nd question, yes this machine does support vista, both 32 and 64 bit

Okay, just chatted online with an HP tech, and she helped me solve the problem!

She said: the printer prints an alignment page everytime you turn on due to incomplete initialization process.

Turn off the printer and Turn on.
Please unplug the usbcable.

  1. Lift the scanner lid of the product.
  2. Place the top of alignment page face down in the left front corner of the glass.
  3. Place the alignment page face down
  4. Close the scanner lid of the printer.
  5. Press the Scan button.
  6. The On/Resume light will blink during the alignment process.
  7. After the On/Resume light stops blinking, alignment is complete.
  8. Turn off printer and Turn on.
It shouldn't print the alignment page any more! :)
Hope this helps!

Please try the following to resolve your issue:
1. Unplug the USB cable and the AC adapter from the back of the scanner.
2. Toggle the Transportation lock (the plastic switch at the back of the scanner) back and forth 5 times, ensuring that the lock is all the way in the unlock position.
3. Reconnect the USB cable and the AC adapter cable, and then try to scan.
