Question about Frigidaire GLMV168K Microwave Oven

Frigidaire Microwave Model GLMV169DBB

Turned on the microwave and a large pop/explosion came from the top right of the unit behind the louvered black fan area. Any ideas? It sounded pretty bad, (enough to make me jump at least 6 inches) and of course it is just out of warranty. Please advise. . . .

TURNED ON AND SOUNDED LIKE THE 4TH OF JULY. FIRE AND SPARKS BLOWING OUT UNDERNEATH NEAR THE EXHAUST AND LIGHT BULBS. SO SEVERE THAT IT BLEW OUT EVERY UNIT LINKED TO THE FUSE BOX. MICROWAVE IS SHOT.

Microwave fan goes on by itself without burners being on or used

It sounds like you understand that the exhaust fan is SUPPOSED TO come on when the microwave oven gets hot when exposed to the heat of the range below it, since you mentioned that no burners are turned on. So in that case, I'm pretty sure that you have a bad fan thermostat. It's usually located behind the control panel on the bottom (inside bottom) of the microwave floor.

GE spacemaker profile xl 1800 moving vent will not close

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.
Did your cooktop lights recently fail?
Sometimes the surge from them shorting will cause damage to the circuit board, which can be repaired.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
There is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Where are the fuses located

Hello

Fuses can be located behind the microwave door or behind a panel either on the interior wall or an exterior panel. Often the fuse will be behind a panel located under the louver vents on top of the microwave.

Have whirlpool gold accuwave micro hood combo model# GH51884XPS5

The inspector is correct, air should be coming through the top louvers, although you sometimes will have a little air coming from the sides and back. Drop the microwave and see which way the blower is rotated, towards the louvers or towards the back or top. Some units also have a panel that blocks the venting from going the wrong way. I have a GE JVM1850CH06 over the stove microwave. It works fine; however, it sometimes has a loud noise that sounds like a vibration or a bearing going out. Checked in the top part for anything loose, but...

It may be a louver or the problem might be the hood vent exhaust fan.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here in order to check those by the book.

Also on those models, electrolytic capacitors sometimes fail on the control circuit board, leading to humming and chattering of relays, etc.

We regularly repair these control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

If you have trouble with your exhaust fan or cooktop lights, please have it repaired right away so the problem doesn't cascade on you.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

When starting to reheat a loud crack, explosion, sound occurred,

As long as the door latches correctly there should be no danger. Some items will cause loud "explosions" in a microwave, such as whole potatoes when the skin has not been pierced. If the food contains pickling spices for example, the seeds will explode with a very loud sound like a gun.

As long as the oven continues to heat, there may be no other problem. But I suggest you stay near the unit when using it. Watch for smoke and be alert for strange odors. You don't mention the age of your oven but if it is new you can call GE customer care at 800 432 2737.

The most common cause of that is a shorted or blown high voltage rectifier diode.

Buttons for light and fan

I had the same problem with the three buttons pushed in.  Here's how I fixed it:
1. turned off power at breaker or pulled plug 2. Unscrewed two screws on top of unit 3. Removed exhaust vent cover/grill by sliding it to the left and out 4. Unscrewed single screw above LCD control panel 5. Removed control panel assembly by sliding it up and out and rested it on a box so wires wouldn't pull out 6. The control board behind the three buttons had dislodged from the clips 7. Secured the control board with the clips and added a little superglue to clips and extra foam padding to keep it from moving. 8. Screwed the control panel back in, powered up, and tested 9. Reattached the exhaust vent and screwed it back in
