Make sure that your firmware is updated correctly. Also make sure the games are the correct region for the unit you're playing on. You may have an incorrect region setup on the PS3. PS3 games are region locked, either being PAL or NTSC. If the PS3 is set to read PAL (by being set to a region that is PAL, like the UK, Europe, and Japan) it will not read or play an NTSC disc.
Misconfigured or corrupted firmware installations can also cause this problem. Furthermore, pirated games will not play, because they do not have the appropriate security key on the disc.
You can try testing this by creating a new profile on the PS3 and trying to play the games. If you can play them with the new profile, then there is a corruption with the old profile. If you can't play them in the new profile, then it could be the firmware.
Lastly you may have a blown drive. Most PS3 games are dual layer blu ray discs capable of storing large amounts of data. The blu ray drive in the PS3 uses a sequenced dual laser to read the game. If one of the laser emitters has blown, it won't read the game correctly. However, since it doesn't use both emitters to read blu ray movie disks or dvds they'll still play correctly.
Games and Systems are almost universally region locked. The only way you can play Japanese games is to pirate them or obtain a Japanese system. Pirating them often means hacking your system however which voids the warranty.
do you play the game by yourself or in two player mode? if you play in single mode, you only go for high scores and will stay locked. when you play with a friend, whenever you unlock a game, it is permenantly open, so you dont have to replay it.
Yikes!! I'd have to agree with you that the system is on the fritz, I suggest that you send it to a professional system repair service. (I can't suggest any off the top of my head, I used to know the number for one but I forgot it.)
Hmmmm.........No sorry, the console from Europe is what we call a PAL edition. THis is the name used for a console from europe. THe gamecube is system locked, Of couse you could answer this by just playing the game if you have it with you. Certain games however are not regian locked and can play, although the list of these games are VEry, VERY small. Soo no
ps3's are region free for gaming,
However, certain functionality specific to the game title may be disabled and unreliable if your game is not from the same region as your playstation 3 system.
the blueray dvd will only play your specific country region film dvd discs.
