Acer Aspire 3100 boot up problem

I have a problem with my acer Aspire 3100. When I turn the machine on the screen stays black and i can't hear the hard drive booting. It is acting like it is hibernating and it won't boot properly. Any advice? Thanks

My Acer Aspire 3500 won't boot. When I press the power on button the fan runs for 4-5 seconds then stops, the HDD light flickers a couple of times then nothing. I see also that the battery charge light is on but nothing else happens.

I installed McAfee and it slowed my Acer Aspire 3100 to a crawl. I uninstalled it and installed AVG. Everything seemed to go ok I left the house and came back and my computer was on but no mouse or keyboard. I turned it off and back on but the screen is black and the hard drive only tries to boot for about 5 seconds then nothing. HELP.... Please tell me there is a simple fix. I have hooked up another monitor, nothing. I have pressed f8 nothing. I've tried F2 nothing.

it does this for me too, fans spins power light, and charge light comes on and nothing no screen or anything, but it will chrge nd discharge the battery :(

This isn't the solution to the problem. I have the same problem as others on here. Other than the fan coming on barely there is no other observable life from the pc. There is no boot screen at which to hit F8 or ALT+F10. The bios is not appearing on the screen.

When we turn the laptop on the power light will come on and you can hear motion inside (probably the fan). The screen is black and nothing will come one. Also when I put a CD in the cd drive it will act like it is working but doesn't work.

my acer 3100 screen went black, however I have power - what could be the problem?

Sam thing discribed. What no one gets is that the disk light comes on, but then goes out with no more life.

Unless it is something more serious, first keep pressing F8 when you turn on the notebook and it should enter safe mode. When in safe mode select the operating system that is highlighted and then a screen will appear with options, one being 'Last Known good Configuration', highlight this and press enter. The system will reboot and start again in windows as normal hopefully. If you are not able to get a screen showing in safe mode there is something more serious wrong and it could be hard drive fault or motherboard, but if you can see the disc drive light flickering the system is loading and you may have a graphical fault.

I have just repaired an aspire 3100 that had a black/blank screen at start up. I found that one of the ram slots was dead. Easy to check, undo the 4 screws holding the large removable panel under the laptop (the one with, amongst others, a round vent grid). Gently prise the cover off starting at the point where there is an indent in the body of the laptop to help you to lift it. There are multiple plastic tabs holding the cover in place, but you just need to ease the cover up to release them. Once the cover is off you will see a couple of small circuit boards (one on top of the other) these are the ram sticks. Caution: make sure that you are touching (and keep contact with) a metal part of the laptop before you proceed. This will help to prevent damage to the ram through static. Additionally, try not to handle the conducting parts of the stick, it is best to handle the ram along the short edges. To get the top stick out, simply ease the spring clips away from the board on each side, it should spring upward, you can then hold the short edges and pull it away and out of the connector. Once the top stick is out, turn on the laptop again to check the screen. If the screen has a picture then the fault is either the slot or the ram stick. To check, pop out the second ram stick and put the first ram stick into the lower slot, fire up the laptop, if it works then the top slot is dead.

If your system is infected you can always use the "LAST RESORT" solution and that is to preform a full system recovery. It will reset your laptop to factory settings.

ALT+F10
tap both while booting computer
press enter at the "edit boot options" screen
select "restore to factory defaults"
