Samsung SH-S182D DVD writer causes a PC reboot when I put a blank DVD+R in. It reads disks with data on with no problems. In fact if you reboot the PC a few times with a blank disk in the DVD writer you can eventually get a clean boot and then write to the blank disk.

Re: Blank DVD Causes PC Reboot
If the pc reboots, then a driver or hardware fault is the cause, try uninstaling the dvd drive in device manager, then restart pc to install it again, or if you are able connect the dvd drive to another ide cable connector incase its a fault from the motherboards ide channel.

is this the first time you are trying to read a blank DVD on it?what program are you using in reading it?explorer will not automatically recognise blank DVD's but programs like NERO will. Are you using a range of blank media you have used before? There is an issue with blank media in as much
how they are pressed/manufactured etc. To ensure compatibilty with the ever increasing range,an update to the burner is usually all that is needed, this is called firmware upgrade. Are you using the correct format disks?
Most drives will read anything, and most burners are
now "all formats", but you may have a burner that is
either one or other, not both, thats to say, your burner
maybe only a "DVD+R/RW" take note of the "plus" sign whereas your blank media maybe "DVD-R/RW".
Have the same problem, it used to work and suddenly it wont do it
anymore. I guess this is due to windows XP updates. Windows says that
the driver is up to date and I also installed the latest firmware. I am
using Nero 7 to burn. I had troubles before but somehow fixed it. Now
when I insert a DVD (data) and try to open the dvd drive the whole
computer hangs. The content shows for a moment before the computer
freezes so it IS in the DVD.
the blue you are refering to is the dye on the disc, sometimes it's purple, normally the darker the better, but it's down to the individual writer and what disc it is compatable with, but your writers problem is all too common, as in my opionion the lasers that are being fitted in writers are of poorer quality than in the earlier days to enable the prices to become lower.
You can try one thing, but it doesnt always work; go to my computer>right click>hardware tab>device manager, then down list to cd/dvd drives and click '+' sign and highlight your writer, right click on it and select uninstall.
Restart PC and it will be automatically re installed, try again and if no change you will need to replace the drive as they are cheaper nowadays
