White things come out of the dryer with rusty marks on them. They appear to have entered the gap between the mouth of the drum and the chassis of the dryer. The furry material on the chassis side of the gap seems to contain the staining substance. When I push a white cloth in the gap and turn the drum, it gets marked. How can I fix this? Thanks!
It could be the adhesive that holds the felt bearings on the front housing. you see the back of the dryer drum has a bearing in its center, the front of the drum rotates on two or more felt pads or bearings in/on the front cover where your door is. you'll need to remove the front cover to replace these felt bearings. there should be two screws, maybe more holding the front cabinet to the rest of the dryer. the bearings will be mounted to the front cabinet right around the hole for the door.

Thanks for the advice. It was just what I needed to motivate me to get serious and fix it. When I had the front housing off I saw that the felt was saturated with rust powder, which was staining the clothes. Also, only one of the three teflon bearing surfaces was left. I replaced that part and also the longer felt strip that goes the rest of the way around the bearing surface, about $50 in total. The instruction sheet that came with the part said that the bearing surface should be painted but it was polished steel; I guess the paint wore off when the teflon pads fell off. I hope that's not a problem, ie, more rust. Then I'll have to replace the whole front housing. Another thing I'm not happy about is part (20%?) of each revolution of the drum sounds different from the other part, not a steady hum. Not sure why.
