I actually had this same problem trying to play Lumines, when inserting a different disc it actually turned up that my PSP would play any other games.
Upon further inspection of my Lumines UMD... the bottom part of it was pushed in (the plastic part) so it touched the disc causing it not to be able to spin or be read by the PSP.
So, my suggestion would be to try a different disc and if that doesn't work I would contact Sony about a defective UMD-drive.
Try a different disk? I've found that sometimes when you turn on the psp and you're in the game menu of the PSP menu, the UMD won't be there, but if you go over to music or something, and go back to game, it will have returned.

Try removing the UMD media and then turning on the PSP. This is because when there is a UMD in, It wants to at least know whats in, and most likely, your UMD drive or your UMD disc is damaged.
First, try to determine your PSP's version. If it is the PSP 3000 (PSP slim with a narrow ring on the UMD Door), you can only play game demos from the PSN and can't be modded as of this date. If you have the PSP 2000 (slim with a wide ring on the UMD door) there is a chance you can't downgrade depending on your motherboard. Pandora's Battery and MMS is required to 'jaibreak' your PSP if you are on Sony official firmware.
What version did you update to? most likely the lens is just dirty a little alcohol and qtip and the lens can be cleaned but be sure to be careful. You can also buy a cleaning disc as well. You might have PSP stop reading UMD discs,
First you will do some trouble shooting with what might be wrong with your PSP
unit.
first is the Disc Spinning motor. This will not let The disc in the
UMD spin. On a working PSP you will hear the disc start to spin up, then you can hear the
laser start to twitch, followed by the laser motor moving the laser down the
rails.
2nd is
something stuck in the UMD gear, try to clean the gear of arm of dust, plastic, soda, and even hair.
and at the last is the actual laser itself. It will not focus the laser to read
the UMD disc.
Hopefully this help, Pls post back should you need additional information...!
Have you inserted the game disc UMD into the PSP itself? You have to wait a few seconds after you turn it on before the game icon will be visible in the main menu screen before you can access the game. When it's active and you have the game icon selected press the "X" button to start the game.
UMD is Universal Media Disc, its a small disc are used for PSP. press the "eject" button on the top to open the disc tray. Usually the problem its not from the UMD, but from the console.
The first check the version you are running on psp, >> Go to the PSP Menu and move across to the
"Settings Menu". Scroll down, select to "System Settings" >>
"System Information" and you should see version of your PSP. If the UMD has a high version than ur console, u need to update ur psp.
