Most likely you cannot. If you do not have any of the colour cartridges with ink in them, the print heads will dry out and when you want to print in colour you will not be able to print in colour.
Yes replace the Yellow cartridge. This is because the printer will construct the black colour as a mix of all the colour inks installed in the printer. However, on the printer preferences you can see when you print a document from an application by using the FILE tab and then selecting the PRINT option then go to PRINTER PREFERENCES there is an option to select printing in Greyscale or Black & White only. Also if you are printing text from an app such as Word make sure that the text is actually 100% black as if it is not then the printer will automatically ignore the black ink cart and try to mix it from the colour ink carts just as it would when printing an image.
hello mvn 500 your printer is a inkjet say yes please remove the your colour catridge or laser printer please change the magenta ink only because laser was a 4 colour option cyan, magenta, yellow and black
Hello, this is Harry from www.BusinessSpread.co.uk.
We had the exact same problem when printing, we used 3 different 78 colour ink cartages and they all said 100% full but did not work. We then had a look at the dates on the box and they were all expired so when buying ink from anywhere even PC world or Curry’s always look at the expiry date.
Today I went to PC world and purchased a new 78 ink which said expires July 2011 and it works perfectly fine.

Thats because it's using the other colours to mix what it thinks to be shades of grey.
Due to the black ink being pigment based and the colours inks dye base, when printing onto glossy paper the machine will use the colour dye based inks to make up black. If you were to print on plain paper, set to greyscale, then the machine will just use the black as the pigment ink sits onto of the plain paper and will not run should the paper get wet. With glossy paper the ink has to be absorbed into the paper ad the Black pigment ink will not do this so the machine will use the coloured inks. Sucks but true.
Most modern printers use some colour when printing Black and therefore will not print if ANY ink cartridge is showing as empty.
Unless your printer has a setting for using Black ink only (this is not the same as printing a black and white document), then you will need to purchase and install the colour cartridges before printing can take place. The good thing about this is that very little colour ink is used when printing black and white documents - so they should last a long time.
