Check to see if your central locking still works on all doors and that you can also operate the driver's door central lock motor. This can sometimes be an issue with the door lock motors themselves and not necessarily the key.
At first,it seems your remote has lost its code.Try using your other keys.
Do you have all doors+hood properly closed?Does your key actually turn in door lock!
The remote handset uses a "rolling code" algorithm, meaning the code
is
changed every time remote locking or unlocking is performed. If you have removed the battery - then that Rolling code was lost.

I think you will find a small hatch on the inside of the tailgate,this will allow you access to unlock the tailgate.Possibly the lock actuator has failed.
