The error report still comes up: 00161 and 00163. I held the F1 key down for a long time.

You need to get into the BIOS setup.

Turn off power to the computer. Wait about 30 seconds. Hold down the F1 key while you turn
on power and keep holding down that key until the setup screen comes up. Go to the network boot section and disable Network Boot. Save setting and restart. That should fix it.

Press the F1 key *before* turning the power on, and keep holding it down after powering it on. If that doesn't work,
try replacing the CMOS battery (then you'll have to reset the BIOS with F1 anyhow).

    Best of luck.

Error 00161 00163 unit comes on and shows this screen any imput would be great thanks

According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set.

Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key.
WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1" This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date

The "hardware maintenance manual" shows you how to maintain this machine, and it explains the meaning of the error codes.
This will get you started on looking for the manual:

IBM Thinkpad 600e (2645),error 189 and could not installing win98

Usually this means a hardware failure. I would suggest reseating the CMOS battery overnight to reset the system. Also you might want to replace it as well. It could also be more serious such as a motherboard component failure.
Also IBM error code # 189 according to Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PC's (8th edition) - "Excessive incorrect password attempts." Is there a password on your CMOS ?
Also try hitting ESC key on boot to bypass. Good luck!

Hand-me-down IBM Thinkpad 600E 2645 has blinking LCD video XP O/S

This sounds to me like either your flourescent lighting tube is beginning to go bad ,,, or the inverter is going bad ... or even both. :-)

The cheapest and easiest solution for you is to simply replace the LCD screen (replacing the inverter or the tube are actually a bit cheaper, but not quite as easy to do - most computer repair centers will try to talk you into a new screen anyway). This is actually very simple for either you or someone you know who is an avid "do-it-yourselfer". IBM makes ity very easy. You will find easy, detailed instructions in the ThinkPad 600/600E (2645) Hardware Maintenance Manual, IBM S10L-9619-03 June 1999 available for FREE downloading in .pdf format on IBMs website. Follow this link to some really sweet deals on LCD screens for your 600e on eBay for under $35.00. http://shop.ebay.com/items/?_nkw=ibm+thinkpad+600e+lcd+screen&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_sop=12&_dmpt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&_odkw=IBM+tube&_osacat=0

Remember you can always connect an external monitor to your ThinkPad until your new screen arrives if you have one. The manual should also give you instructions to change out the tube if you wish to save a few more bucks and try that route. Hope this will FIX-YA! Please leave your feedback and let me know!

Ibm think pad 600e

Do a search for memtest86.iso. Burn this image to a cd and reboot your computer. When your computer reboots it should begin checking your memory for errors. If you still have problems it might be your hard drive.

My ibm think pad has a error message and when it turn on that is all that comes up

I've seen this once before, except there was an error code 225 that went with the hand. turned out to be an unsupported or bad memory chip. There should be on board memory on your model try taking out the memory and starting it.

Thinkpad 600E

IBM Thinkpad error code 19990301 is a Hard-Disk sector problem. Basically your hard-drive is faulty and you need to replace it. This is why it wont boot; because the area of the hard-drive that stores data is damaged.
