Dell Precision 490 freezes during POST

Occasionally, my Dell 490 will freeze in POST with diagnostic lights 2 and 3 lit. Lookiing at the manual this says possible hard drive failure.
If I lay the machine on it's side, open it up and replug the hard drive cables it seems to fix it temporarily, but doesn't last for long.
Diagnostic tests on the drives doesn't come up with any faults

Any ideas

Thanks Joed911, I will check it out.

Do you know exactly what the diagnostic lights are an indication of?

The Power Led is solid green and the freeze is happening during POST not Pre-Bios.

Following your link,I have found the Dell document for POST bios diagnostics. Suggests it could be hard drive, or USB storage devices. I will follow their instructions to find the culprit!

Dell poweredge t105 freezes at boot

You will have to get into the controlled setup in order to find out what the problem is, or you can simply hit ctrl-D and do the Dell disk diagnostics which will take an hour or more, but will give you an idea of where to start.

Logically, if it won't boot, then your RAID is probably broken. it can sometimes be repaired through either the RAID or controller setup menu, which you can see during boot.

go here, for the manuals and documentation on how to do that: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/poweredge-t105/manuals

"A possible VRM 1 failure has occurred"

VRM stands for Voltage Regulator Module.

It regulates Voltage for the Processor.

The Processor MUST have a steady, 'clean', supply of Voltage; and it MUST be kept within the tight voltage range, for the Processor.

Too little, or too much; and the Processor turns off. (BIOS turns it off)

Your motherboard supports two Processors.

1) Processor (CPU_0) Zero which is in the middle of the motherboard, next to the PCI Express x16 slot;

2) and Processor (CPU_1) One, which is next to it.

The VRM 1 has failed. Needs to be replaced.

VRM's used are interchangeable.

IMHO you can remove Processor 1 (CPU_1), and it's VRM, and still use the computer; albiet slower though.

The power led flashing amber can mean a failure of one rail in the power supply, or a bad connection (The cables are removable from the power supply) so you may try reseating power connections internally.
1 & 3 LEDs can mean a RAM failure

Dell Precision 490 constant reboot after ghost image completed

Hello-

I figured out how to ghost a Dell Precision 490 with a 32 bit Windows XP Image! Like you I had the same problem where it would constantly reboot after I imaged it with an existing 490 image. The answer is actually very simple. Boot up your Precision 490 and hit F2 to enter the bios. Select Drives and then SATA Operation, change it to "Raid Autodetect / ATA". Reboot the 490 and re image the machine, it will now work!

Blank screen with cycling colours (no BIOS; no POST)

Try running diagnostics. Tap F12 repeatedly on the dell logo till you get the boot device menu. Choose diagnostics. Go through it.

If it doesnt even pull up the diagnostics, you can follow this walkthrough from dell's website.
