SOURCE: Smasung MW7490w door/turntable problem

It's probably a defective door switch, probably the upper one, or the mount which holds the switch is broken. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP button) is the primary cause of door switch failure. There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door hooks latch when you close the door. The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly. Usually it's not a loose screw, but instead a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position.

SOURCE: when I open my microwave door, it starts running

.
In most cases, it's not actually cooking, but instead the fan, turtable and light may be on. Yet it does need attention.

What this usually means is that you have a shorted door switch or a bad door switch mount.

It's easy to tell if it's actually cooking, just place a cup of water inside and see if it heats.

If so, that could mean a stuck relay on the control board. If so, we repair these for customers nationwide with our guaranteed $39.95 service. Far less than a new board.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and
disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Please write back with more details if you need further help.

First of all, it's under warranty. So I would contact Maytag for a free fix.

See http://maytag.com/support/service_parts.jsp

For an out of warranty reply:

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

SOURCE: Microwave oven runs with door open

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

SOURCE: turntable microwave oven (model JE1540WW 002) (serial ZR943877S)

Chances are that it is not actually microwaving, but that can be checked by placing a small cup of water inside.

Overall, though, it's not a good idea to run it if it's not working right.

This problem is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

Microwave let's you set the time to cook but when you press the button to start the process nothing happens

Try a power disconnect at the plug socket for 5 minutes. If that doesn't reset it, you will need a local repairer. The most likely reason is a door safety micro-switch has failed or moved out of adjustment. There are normally three on the door and hinges to prevent operation with an open door.

Microwave oven will not start but the light stays on even when door is open.

One of the micro switches in the door is stuck ( faulty ) there are normally 3 switches so after removing the lid open and close the door and you will see the door latches pressing in the button of the micro switch and one of them would indicate that one of the switches is not in line with the latch to press the button in or one of the micro switches has melted inside cosign the switch to release normally open or normally closed, you need a multimeter to test the switches in that case

Does the exhaunst fan turn on automatically when we cook or warm food items in our Samsung Microwave -- SMH 9187W?

Some interesting reading on page 8 of the owner's manual:

"Boilovers cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite and spread if the vent fan is operating. To minimize automatic fan operation, use adequate sized cookware and use high heat on surface units only when necessary."

And on page 20:

"If the temperature becomes too hot around the microwave oven, the fan in the vent hood will automatically turn on at the LEVEL 2 setting to cool the oven. The fan will automatically turn off when the oven has cooled down sufficiently. This is an automated process and cannot be turned off. The fan may stay on for 30 minutes or more after the cooktop and microwave controls are turned off. The Vent Fan will only operate in 1~4 levels modes while the microwave is working."

"Using the Vent delay off button
1. Press the Delay Off button once to turn the fan off after 1 minute.
2. Press the Delay Off button twice to turn the fan off after 3 minutes.
3. Press the Delay Off button three times to turn the fan off after 5 minutes.
4. Press the Delay Off button fiour times to turn the fan off after 10 minutes.
5. Press the Delay Off button five times to turn the fan off after 30 minutes."

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can still download it free here.

Door

What usually breaks is the door open lever.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be removed.

Please unplug the oven first.

If you or someone you know wants to look into this, we have critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

If you reply back to this with your brand and model number, we can steer you toward a part source, and possibly toward exploded view diagrams, etc.
